Gambetta Extends Win Skein to Five Scores With Ease In Susan Stakes Crowd of Nearly 12,000 at ThistleDown Sees Gircller Miss Defeat Royal Indian By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ■ THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 19.— The largest crowd of the current meeting, nearly 12,000 fans, turned out on a delightful afternoon to witness the nine-race program which was conducted over a lightning-fast track. The ,430 Susan Stakes for two-year-old fillies at five and one-half furlongs headlined the program and a bulky field of 13 went to the post. Thomas M. Girdlers Gambetta, the favorite, drew clear after disposing of Palatine Stables Royal Indian with a furlong left to register her second stakes victory of her career. Royal Indian, who ran as part of an entry with Set Cable, was three and one-half lengths back and a length to the good of J. Howard Rouses Beta Ray. Gambetta was strongly ridden by Paul A. Ward and paid .60. She was timed in 1:04%. Mrs. Rose Pondfield, wife of Thistle-Downs managing director, was in the winners enclosure and presented owner Gird-ler with a handsome trophy. The Susan Stakes which was having its second running was named for Mrs. Pondfields granddaughter. Won Debutante at Downs The winners share of the purse comes to ,114.50 and Gambetta was scoring her fifth consecutive victory. Her other stakes victory was in the Debutante at Churchill Downs on Derby day. Beta Ray, ridden by Donal Bowcut, showed in front momentarily at the start, but Royal Indian from the inside moved through to gain the lead a few strides after the break. Gambetta between horses was second and Fussy Lady, third. Beta Ray, on -the extreme outside, had fallen back into fifth position. Royal Indian showed the way by a half length over Gambetta racing round the far turn. The latter was well in hand and Ward was not ready as yet to make his move. Fussy Lady ridden by Gail Parker was still third and Beta Ray had moved up a notch into fourth position. Entering the stretch Gambetta moved up along side Royal Indian from the outside and at the furlong marker had moved to the fore by a half length. Beta Ray was now third another two lengths off the pace and Fussy Lady had dropped back into fourth position. Top Fair, along the inside, was making up some ground another position farther back. Through the final eighth of a mile the winner increased her advantage with every stride and served notice that she will be heard from In future filly stakes here in the Middle West. She went under the wire with ease. Royal Indian, who won the Bay State Kindergarten Stakes at Suffolk Downs, was just able to hold on over Beta Ray who was closing in on that one from the inside though never a threat to Gambetta. Top Fair, ridden by Bill Carstens, had to be satisfied with fourth money. Gambetta was shipped here earlier in the week from the MRA where she last won on June 1. Trainer Kenny Noe accompanied the filly into the Cleveland area. Her total earnings for the season are now 6,489.50. Jockey Paul A. Ward won both the feature races here this afternoon when he climaxed his Susan .victory aboard Gambetta with Charles Everitts Little Imp in the ,000 Shakertown Handicap. Norman S. Scavas JMr. Skip was second three lengths back and a head in front of Jerry Lynchs Raintree. Little Imp,- a candidate for the ThistleDown Cup to be run here in July, paid .00 and was timed in an excellent 1:43%, just three-fifths of a second over Mad Hares track record. The Emerald Hill Stables Fulton Market scored his inital tally in. two years when he reached the wire a length and a half in the van of Remlap who was a scant nose before Leslie Jane Stables Avella at the end of the mile and a furlong. The winner was ridden by Benny CMtello and paid a handsome 8.00. Palace-Circles, sporting the colors of the locally owned Dorchester Farm, opened a long lead soon after the start with the eventual winner second leaving the first turn and Maripam another outsider third. Palace-Circles tired and midway along the backstretch Fulton Market took over with the early pacesetter second a head to the good of Maripam. Belevue Joe was moving along dangerously while fourth" and Avella, the favorite, fifth. The ultimate winner drew clear by three lengths entering the straightaway with Avella now having moved into the runner-up position and Maripam third. Palace-Circles was now last. Fulton Market had to be shaken up somewhat through the stretch to keep him about his business when it appeared as though Remlap may be successful in his bid to overtake him. The latter moved from well back in the pack and from the outside. W. E. Schlusemeyers Natousa, ridden nicely by apprentice Floyd Green, scored her third straight tally over this track when she downed Arbywood Stables Con-sus by three parts of a length in the fourth event. Efcee was third another two lengths in arrears. The Daily Double paid 51.20 as Vince McCarthys Moro captured the first race and J. Wards Labelle Miss, at 02.40, nailed down the honors in the second half. Moro was ridden by Al Widman and paid 3.20 being caught in 1:05%. j r 1 rt
