Crowd of 12,000 Views Program at River Downs Jockey Norman Hart Is Astride Two Straight Winners ori Card By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 19. — River Downs of Ohio played host this afternoon to the largest crowd of the current meeting. The early estimates were in excess of 12,000 people but a quick glance at the mutuel play would indicate that the play is off considerably to what it was for the same day last season. The weather, however, was ideal throughout the afternoon and in general every aspect of the sport was inducive to a large crowd and an even greater handle. Jockey Norman Hart rode two consecutive winners on the afternoons card. The Pawhuska, Okla., lad was astride W. NeiUs, Colonel Velvet in the third race to make it two in a row for the Colonel OF colt. Showing the style for which Hart is famous in this area, he broke on top with his charge, withstood the early challenges of Gay Ribbons, which had the saddle servies of jockey R. Reynolds, finally drew clear of the latter in the early stretch and widened the advantage considerably from the eighth pole to the wire. The winners time was :59% for the five furlongs, registering the best time for that distance at the current meeting. Hart was astride Frances Alveys Charlie Bowman in the fourth to score a consecutive victory for that sophomore High Quest gelding. Again the favorite, he sent Charlie Bowman six furlongs in 1:12% and executed a similar sort of driving ride as he did on Colonel Velvet. Although unable to outrun Southern Rio and on the extreme outside, Hart bettered position steadily in the stretch, turn to get to the leaders in the early stretch and dropped his nose down in front at the wire.
