Edgemete Handicap at Aqueduct Draws Invigorator as Topweight Among Nine Improving Saxon Stable Coltf Has Domquil, County Clare, Matagorda, Bassanio as Foes By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 25. The 42nd running of the 5,000 added Edge-mere Handicap is the feature attraction here at Aqueduct Saturday. With none of the topweights accepting the issue, Saxon Stables Invigorator heads a field of nine in this mile and a furlong with a moderate 117 pounds, most of which will be Eric Guerin. The four-year-old son of Brookfield indicated that he was regaining some of the fine form he displayed at two and early last year by finishing second to Find in the Queens County Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth on June 14, tiring in the final yards, but finishing le.ss than a length back of the winner . Several of Invigorators rivals finished behind him in the Queens County. W. Hag-gin Perrys Domquil was fourth in that test, Saga Stables Flaunt finished sixth. Ogden Phipps Bassanio was seventh, Mrs. H. P. Christiansens Mandingo eighth and Joe W. Browns Matagorda 10th. In the weight department, Invigorator picks up an additional three pounds, Domquil carries the same 113, Flaunt adds one to carry 105, Bassanio carries the same 110, Man-dingo drops three to pack 109 and Mata- Coniinued on Page Fifty-Six I nvig orator Heads Nine in Edgemere Improving Saxon Stable Colt Has Domquil, County Clare, Matagorda as Aqueduct Foes Continued from Page One gorda also drops three and also carries 109 pounds tomorrow. Matagorda, Bassanio and Flaunt appeared again in a test at a mile and a furlong on June 18 in which the first named was narrowly beaten by Begorra, with Bassanio another two lengths in arrears, while Flaunt flattened out badly to finish fifth. Brookmeade Stables County Clare, 109; Killian Farms Resilient, 106, and Cain Hoy Stables Armageddon, 109 pounds complete the field. County Clare is intrinsical-" ly a colt of considerable class, but infirmities have kept him from the races for much of his career. Recently he returned to action at Pimlico and beat the clever Repe-toire by three lengths at six furlongs. Augustine Catalano will ride tomorrow. If up to carrying" his speed for nine furlongs, the son of Shannon n. will obviously be very dangerous. Resilient Second on June 10 Resilient finished second to Bassanio at Belmont Park on June 10, then again finished second to First Aid at Monmouth Park in track record time for a mile and a furlong. George Glassner will ride the consistent four-year-old, who seems well treated in the weights. Armageddon has not been seen since the Suburban on May 31, in which he tired badly after ahowing speed for a mile. The one-eyed horse had won a couple of races at a mile and a sixteenth before that. Bennie Green is slated to ride. Jim Nichols will be on the improving Domquil, Sidney Cole will again pilot Bassanio, Conn McCreary replaces Bedley Woodhouse on Mandingo, an indication that an attempt may be made to rate this speed horse. Dick McLaughlin will guide Matagorda, while no pilot has been named for Flaunt. In past years the Edgemere has gone to such stars of the handicap division as Hermis, Ballot, George Smith, Lucullite, Peanuts, Hash, Apache, Stymie, Three Rings and One Hitter. Last years edition of the Edgemere was won by the three-year-old Level Lea, who went on to become one of the leaders of the division dominated by Native Dancer. There doesnt appear to be anything of the ciass of those mentioned in tomorrows field, but this Edgemere shapes up as a well-balanced event that should produce a hard-fought contest with no outstanding favorite.
