Lincoln Has Successful Homecoming Average43,691 At 30-Day Meeting Sir Mango Star of Session With Three Stake Victories; Johnny Adams .Tops Riders Lincoln Fields returned to its own remodeled, modernized plant at Crete, 111., 41 miles south of Chicago, this spring and the 3Q-day meeting which concluded last Wednesday was the most successful in the 30-year history of the course, according to managements own admission. This was the first session at the Crete course since 1942. Total pari-mutuel handle for the session was 9,310,741, a daily average of 43,-691. The attendance for the 30 afternoons was 278,576, a daily mean of 9,286. Last year, when the term of a like number of days was held at Hawthorne, the daily average betting reached 80,607 and the crowds totaled 13,444 on a daily mean basis. " But these figures belie one important factorLincoln Fields didnt have a landlord this season. Harry Eads big, four-year-old,. Sir Mango, emerged as the particular star of the Lincoln proceedings, scoring in three handicaps. Sir Mango first took the second division of the Crete on May 20, then the Edward J. Fleming Memorial, June 5, and wound up his grand slam with a track-mark-breaking performance in the 0,000 Lincoln Handicap last Saturday. With jockey Dave Erb sitting still, Sir Mango sliced a fifth of a second off the mile and one-sixteenth track standard with a sparkling 1:43 flat under 123 pounds. Earns 9,362 By sweeping his three appearances under silks, Sir Mango earned 9,362 to easily top the thoroughbreds in money winnings. Sir Mangos stakes triple also enabled Eads to beat out Hasty House Farm for leading monetary honors among the owners. Bads aggregate was exactly what Sir Mango earned, while Hasty House .finished with 3,727 on four victories, three seconds and a pair of show awards. Another track mark went by the boards when. E. P. Mete Roman Heart clipped two-fifths of a second off the five-furlong record when she ran the distance in :58 to win the fourth race on closing day. Roman Heart won by three lengths under Steve Brooks. The old mark was set by American Byrd in 1938 and equalled by Lea Lane early in the meeting. Lea Lane, Charlton Clays fleet juvenile daughter of Nasrullah Lea Lark, by Bull Lea, tied, the mark when she won the major award of 1,900 in the Miss America Stakes, June 12. Other stake winners were Hasty Houses Pomace, Top Traffic, speedy two-year-old: Mister Carter, Sea O Erin, also owned by Hasty House, and Super Devil, owned by W. Gruber of New Orleans, who races under the nom de course of the Rebel Stable. Pomace not only took the first division of the Crete Inaugural, but also the La Salle Handicap on May 29 to join Sir Mango in the mpre-than-one-stakes-victory class. Adams Has 22 Winners Two veterans, Johnny Adams and SteVe Brooks, and Johnny Heckmann battled for leading jockey laurels, with the former 22 winners to 19 each for the fcjair. Adams, though riding in fewer Railing, Khan Brooks and Heckman, had the average, .26. illiam Hal Bishop, a perennial leader mi the Chicago circuit, easily bested the trainers with 13 victories. His closest competition came from the triumpvirate of W. J. Schmidt, Howard Wells and Earl Wyatt with seven apiece. Thats the .capsule comment on the Lincoln Fields meeting of 1954, which cannot be dismissed without a brief on the inclement weather for several days around the Memorial Day holiday, and on the big holiday a baby tornado struck the plant at feature race time. Earlier in the day, transportation difficulties had been encountered, but the management cannot be faulted for either the weather or the transportation entanglement. General manager Peter J. ODonnell promises more improvements next season. The track also will have a new president, William J. McCormack having resigned to devote full time to his eastern business.
