Charley Foy in Driving Victory at ThistleDown Favored Mahplay Is Second After Being in Close Quarters on Turns THISTLEDOWN; North Randall, Ohio, June 25. Mrs. Robert Cramers Charley Foy, scored a driving length and a half victory over Mrs. A. M. Creechs favored Mahplay in the featured fifth race here this afternoon. Third at the end of the five and a half furlongs was A. B.. Corbins Ky. River another two lengths removed and three lengths to the good of John K. Wyn-koops Coruscate. Albert Widman was astride the winning son of Fort Ben and as a team they were timed in 1:06 over the fast strip, Charley Foy paid .60 as the strong second choice in the eight-horse field. A good turnout of about 6,000 came out to view the sport this afternoon on a hot and rather muggy day. Two of the publics choices have been successful in the first five events. Charley Foy moved through along the rail to wrest command as the field raced towards the far turn, Red Romeo was second and Sis time also saving ground in -third spot. Mahplay after getting away in last had only improved one position and was between horses. Mahplay could not gain sufficient racing room on the turns and had to be content with his seventh position. The ultimate winner was now in the van by a length with Red Romeo still second another head to the good Sistime who was beginning to shorten her stride. Charley Foy drew clear of his opposition by three lengths as he flashed by the furlong station with Mahplay still well back in the pack and still having his troubles finding a suitable hole to come through. Red Romeo remained in closest pursuit. Mahplay finally got clear just inside the furlong marker and responding willingly to apprentice Whitings urging set sail after the pacesetter, but the rally was belated and Charley Foy went under the wire with a length and a half cushion although probably not the best horse. Charley Foy was making his third start of the meeting and was winning for the first time. Selinsgrove, a nominee for the Endurance Stakes, broke his maiden in the first race with a three lengths spread over Miss M. D. There was a dead heat for third between Space Echo and Chuckie Jr. The winner paid .80 and was ridden by Joe Servis. The second race went to Sweet Kathie by a neck over Clydestown and Gail Parker. Sweet Kathie was handled by Charley McKee and paid 6.20 to complete a 3.80 Daily Double.
