Storm of Gold Heads Field In Queen City Handicap Takes Up 119 While He Meets Lieutenant and Ten Other Rivals By W. A. CRUSE Staff- Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 25. River Downs presents the first of its traditional feature offerings Saturday in the fifth running of the ,500 Queen City Handicap. For three-year-olds and older horses, at one and one-eighth miles, 12 accepted the weights assigned by racing secretary and handicapper Eugene W. Bury. The top impost of 119 pounds goes to E. Frisse and W. Jones Storm of Gold. Next in consideration is Wise and Sickings Lieutenant, with 112. J. R. Wisemans Le Gaulois and F. M. Ashbys Ball Hawk will have 111 each; Harry Rector, Jr.s Moon of Hearts and Mrs. J. Bronnenbergs Mad Saint 110, Mrs.. L. Barry and Mrs. B. Fedors Pat-the-Pilot 108, Mrs. F. Brohmans Even Better. The Queen City had its initial running in 1950 when the Carlisle and Glover Stables Puddle Jumper went the distance in 1:56. The following year, the Welikit Farms Watch Susan shaved the time considerably for the victory and was clicked in 1:52. Pat-the-Pilots victory in 1952 was under 118 pounds and the time for the race was 1 : 54. Last year O. Braschs Sob Story turned in the best time of all while negotiating the distance in 1:50. Of this group Pat-the-Pilot is the only one aiming at becoming a two-time winner of the Queen City. For his victory in the event he carried 118 pounds, ten more than he is burdened with Saturday. Storm of Gold appears well-deserving of the high impost after the victory in the Ohio State Handicap last Saturday. This latter event, traditionally a prep, for the Queen City, had a mile and one-sixteenth setting and the Stormscud mare was a neck the best of the steady Luciete while being clocked in 1:43. Rebounder was third in the Ohio State and is picking up but five pounds over the impost that day and is another -with this added sixteenth of a mile distance, who could furnish the bone of contention. Mad Saint, Pat-the-Pilot and Lieutenant finished in that order. The shift in weights is not prohibitive to a winning effort being displayed by either one of-the latter group. First Boston, though .appearing a bit ambitiously placed, has been improving remarkably well at this meeting. This full Boston Man horse came from far off the pace to score a neck victory over P. L. Rices Little Less in a ,000 claiming event last Wednesday. His time was a very commendable 1:45 and he carried 115 pounds. The 105 pounds for this event, plus the additional sixteenth of a mile; should be a factor in his favor for at least one of the minor awards.
