Jockey Dave Erb was known as a crack two-year-old rider in California before coming East a couple of seasons ago. Matter of fact, he was unable to obtain many mounts in the West when two-year-olds I m.un were not competing. However, he did not wish to be tvoed as strictlv a rider of juveniles and when he moved to the Chicago area demonstrated his ability by doing well on horses of all ages. However, at Arlington Park opening day he proved he is still one of the best two-year-old reinsmen in the land by steering the winners of both ends of the opening day s Primer Stakes. Each of his exhibitions was flawless. A A A Nine of the 21 colts starting in the Primer were purchased at public auction as yearlings. But two, Will See and Laches, have "won themselves out." Will Sees price was ,500 and his fourth money opening day brought his earnings up to ,180. Laches cost ,500 and has earned ,550. Beau Busher is close. Bought for 2,000 he has taken down 0,825. Ocean Wave, Indicative and Our Prince w-e acquired by Mrs. E. Constantin for a total of 8,000. They have earned 00 between them . . . And while on the subject of purchase price, two horses starting in .Thursdays fourth race for ,000 each were costly yearlings. Top News, who finished third, brought 7,500 and Peace Jitters, who was unplaced, cost 8,000. AAA Beau Bushers dam, Late Date, won the Washington Park Handicap of 1935 and his sire, Mr. Busher, won the Arlington Futurity of 1948 . . . Munchausen is evidently named for Baron Munchausen, the teller of tall tales. Is by Mighty Story . . . Mickey McMahon was beaming in the winners circle after Dark Grier had won a Primer division. Young gelding is by Mickeys sire, Sedgemoor. Dark Grier was the first stakes winner for both owner K. T. Becklian and trainer Enoch Rae . . . Bay-brook ran a good race following a long period of inactivity ... It is unusual that not a single three-year-old started on Thursdays bill. They were eligible to but one race, but none were entered. AAA Lillal, winner of the Colonial Handicap at Garden State, was an arrival . . . Rock Pilot, who showed good early speed in the second division of the Primer, will be sent to ThistleDown to fill a stake engagement July 3 . . . Jockey Arnold Kirkland, who DR. ROBERT BUTZOW Is serving as one of the track veterinarians at the Arlington Park course. was thrown from Serry in the first race Thursday, was released from the hospital after having undergone an examination. Came from Detroit. . .Dr. Robert Butzow, graduate of the University of Illinois and now a member of the faculty at that college, has been appointed one of the track veterinarians at Arlington and Washington Parks. . .Horatio Luro was delayed, but the gallant senor is expected to arrive in a few days ... Morton Weil brought nine thoroughbreds from Delaware Park. They are owned by Mrs. E. Kendall Weil Lucien Knight, Jr., got in from Lexington with five head . . . A. H. Warner arrived from the East with Loridale and several others . . . Kenneth Noe, Sr., has eight head quartered here . . . Allan Brewer, prominent artist who makes a specialty of sketching and painting thoroughbred horses, is an arrival . . . Steward Aidan Roark arrived wearing a California sun-tan. AAA W. J. Schmidt has a two-year-old colt of which he is quite, proud. Name is Lianel and he is a full brother of the stakes winning filly, Lillal, and who won his very first start. . .Sunny Dale, owned by the Buddah Stable, was shipped to Delaware Park to fulfill a stakes engagement. . .Trainer Dee Brooks was stricken with an attack of pto- maine poisoning while motoring here and was hospitalized for three hours after having his stomach pumped. . .Edward F. Moore, Cook County chairman for the Republican Party, and. Walter McCarron, Cook County coroner, were out for the opening and had as their guest Frank J. Gostodaric, Joliet hotel owner. AAA Mignon Eberhardt, noted writer of mystery novels, was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bokum in the Post and Paddock Club. Mrs. Bokum is one of the editors of the Chicago Tribune book review. , .Mrs. Ednyfed Williams, wife of the former chairman of the Illinois Racing Board, was unable to be present for the opening, having just undergone an emergency operation. Major Williams says she is resting easily at Passavant Hospital, Chicago . . .Pat Kelly, representative of Howard Reinemans Crown Crest Farm, was an opening day visitor. . .Singing star Doris Day was among those present and .did the honors in the winners circle at the conclusion of the sixth race. . .Forty-five lucky people held tickets on the Daily Double. One 0 ticket and one ticket were also sold. The Double paid ,461.80, which was not a record for the track.
