j Butch K., Lefty James and Gunner Lad Clash in Brandeis Memorial at Omaha First Two Are Track Record Holders While Third Was53 Meets Handicap Champion j By J. R. BATTY Staff Correspondent AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., June 25. Two track record holders at this mile track, Butch K..and Lefty James, and last years local handicap champion, Gunner Lad, are slated to meet, along with five other entrants in the ,100 added George Brandeis Memorial here Saturday. Butch K. is holder of the track standard of 1:43 set in 1952 for one and a sixteenth miles, at which distance the Brandeis will be settled, and Lefty James possesses the best time of 1:09 for six furlongs over the local strip, established on June 19 during the current session. Gunner Lad, as a three-year-old last year, won six of his eight starts locally, including the sixth running of the stakes test which heads Saturdays bill of eight races. Others in the field in the main attraction are Gold Tree Stables" Mac, 118; H. C. Zellers Open Heir, 109; T. M. Johnsons Hiram Jr., 112; Harry Wells Calloway K., 110, and Mrs Sadie Foleys Just Judy, 108. Lefty James, owned by J. K. Houssels, of Las Vegas, Ne.v., is the highweight bf the group under 125 pounds. Gunner Lad is next with 121 pounds while Butch K. has been assigned 113 pounds. Lefty James burden in this engagement is two pounds more than he shouldered when speeding six furlongs in 1:09 in his latest appearance. This five-year-old gelded son of Bull Reigh Paulas Lulu came to the end of the journey with two and a half lengths to spare over Hiram Jr. Mac was third, another pair of lengths away. This outing will be Lefty James first attempt locally to go more than six furlongs. From j three sprint tries her,e he won twice and was third the remaining time out. Gunner Lad was a little slower coming to hand this season but indicated in his latest race, when scoring easily by nine lengths, that he is presently at peak condition This was his sixth start this season. He was unsuccessful in three races at Oak--lawn Park and beaten twice locally before registering in the Ambassador Handicap, at one mile and 70 yards and at the direct expense of Butch K. Calloway K. was third another length back. Bred by his owner and trainer, Dell T. Crabtree, this four-year-old son of Cannons Roar Martha Vito is a free running sort of colt and better suited when going a route of ground. Butch K., now seven years old, during his career has been a frequent winner in handicap races at this track and has a large following, among local turfites. He made his seasonal debut at this meeting and, in three outings following, has not failed to get his number on the infield tote" board. Sprinting his first time out, he picked up the place award for his partner owners, Guy and Walter Shultz, in back of Roman Secret. Going a mile and 70 yards in his next, Butch K. tallied over Royal Ghost, then came back in a route test and finished third to Calloway K. Thursdays twilight program produced the longest straight pay-off of the meeting when Brown Teddy returned 05.40 after capturing the seventh race. Brown Teddy was the extreme outsider in the wagering. Apprentice Celestino Dominguez completed a triple for the afternoon when triumphing with Flying Bry in the featured sixth race. Flying Bry was a popular victor with 8,970 fans and paid .20 after downing Madeos Dream by three lengths. Dominguez won with Biloxi Belle in the first race and Little Duster in the fifth race.
