Delaware Oaks Brings Out Fourteen Cherokee Rose Meets Strong Opposition in 8,125 Race Cain Hoy Miss Has Devils Delight as Running Mate; Open Sesame, June Fete Go By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 25. Fourteen of Americas foremostthree-year-old fillies are scheduled to match strides at nine furlongs Saturday afternoon , in the sixteenth and richest running of the Delaware Oaks. Should the overnight field remain intact, the owner of the victress will net 7,040 of the 8,125 gross purse. Eight of the Oaks entrants are also eligible for the 00,000 added New Castle Handicap, worlds richest .race for fillies and mares, to be renewed on closing day, July 5. Heading the Oaks field is the powerful Cain Hoy Stable tandem of Cherokee Rose and Devils Delight, while another coupling in the race is that of King Ranchs River-ina and Mrs. Edward Laskers Pen-in-Hand, both of whom are conditioned by Max Hirsch. Other prominent contestants are: Walter M. Jeffords Open Sesame, Happy Hill Farms June Fete and Green-tree Stables Indian Legend. Rounding out the field will, be Mrs. Marion W. OConnors Busy Nellie, Cornelius V. Whitneyis Small Favor, Brandywine Stables Rain, Mrs. Royal Firman, Jr.s Fleet Gold, Fox-catcher Farms Parlo, Circle M Farms Level Rippey and Philip Godfreys OAlison. Cherokee Rose, with the Coaching Club American Oaks already to her credit, and DevilsDelight, who galloped to an impressive victory in her recent belated seasonal bow, likely will fill the role of favorites in the Oaks. Cherokee Rose, though beaten by June Fete at a mile and a sixteenth earlier in the week, turned in a creditable performance, while Devils Delights six furlongs in 1:11 gave many viewers the impression that she may be as capable as her stakes winning companion. Hank Moreno will be astride Cherokee Rose, while Devils Delight will enjoy the saddle services of Hedley Woodhouse. Open Sesame Beaten Head in CCAO Open Sesame hasnt raced since running Cherokee Rose to a head in the Coaching Club Oaks, but she has been kept razor sharp with excellent local trials. The Mahmoud filly, who will be ridden by Eddie" Arcaro, will endeavor to emulate the feat of Jeffords Kiss Me Kate, the 1951 winner, who was recently reported in foal to Heliopolis. As mentioned earlier, June Fete was a winner over Cherokee Rose in their recent meeting, the Orestes m. filly being eased to the end of the mile and a sixteenth in 1:45 flat. Always partial to the local track, this miss could join the ranks of stakes winners with a repeat performance Saturday. Busy Nellie and Level Rippey were also behind June Fete, the former beaten slightly more than a length and a half while a length in front of Level Rippey. Small Favor, last years Selima winner who was injured in Kentucky during the spring, showed promise of returning to form, in her last outing, in which she was third behind Devils Delight. At the end of that six furlongs she was five lengths behind the winner- and went but a full mile in 1:39. The coupling of Riverina and Pen-in- Hand cannot be overlooked, with -the first- named filly apparently the better of the team. She was unplaced against the colts in the Belmont but was far from disgraced. 1 Earlier in the year she finished in a dead l heat with Happy Mood in the Acom and was third behind Cherokee Rose and Open i Sesame in the Coaching Club. j Considerable local support will go to i Rain and Parlo, each of whom usually comes up a good effort. Rain was the t easiest kind of winner at a mile and a six- t teenth in 1:45, while Parlo was second i behind Greek Lady while sprinting. Indian i Legend also was second in her qualifying s race, weakening slightly in the late strides i to be nosed out by First Watch at a mile t and a sixteenth. Fleet Gold, like Rain, won f her last in 1:45, while OAlison was un- j placed in back of On Your Own and Eve- t ning Shot in the recent Gazelle. c r
