4 Wagon Drill All Out to Turn Back Closing Bid of Betsann Lewin Miss Three-Quarters Of Length Before Rival at Wire in Jerseys Vagrancy By JOE HIRSCII MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 16. Mrs. Sam Lewins Wagon Drill wrested command at the eighth pole in the featured Vagrancy Purse today, then was forced to go all out to withstand a game drive by Clearwater Stables Betsann, who closed fastest of all and was three-quarters of a length behind the winner at the wire. Another neck farther back came Rokeby Stables Blue Banner, the 4 to 5 choice, who was sloughed in close quarters turning for home. Piloted by Sam Boulmetis, who was registering a double after tallying with Calm Warrior in the fifth event, Wagon Drill returned 0 for her fourth victory of the campaign and increased her seasons earnings to 5,000. The three-year-old Spy Song filly has been a consistent performer in good allowance company along the Maryland circuit all spring and has. beaten colts and geldings on occasion. She was claimed by her present interests for 1,000 at Hialeah in February. Ellens Spy Grabs Lead An attendance of 11,464 turned out in beautiful weather, saw Ellens Spy jump to an early lead and hang up an initial quarter in a brisk :21 with Hello Mom in hot pursuit and Wagon Drill well placed to launch a move at the half-mile marker. Blue Banner, the odds-on favorite, was fourth at this point, Happy princess and Snooty in the second flight. Curving for home, Hello Mom moved outside Ellens Spy to take the lead, the latter retiring as Wagon Drill climbed to second place. The winner spurted past the quarter pole and here Blue Banner was pinched between Wagon Drill and Ellens Spy. Wagon Drill continued in front Continued on Page Forty-Five Wagon Drill All Out to Turn Back Closing Bid of Betsann Continued from Page One through the final furlong, but Betsann launched a terrific stretch move and just missed the victor while Blue Banner was righted by Ken Church and held third money safe against Reddy Ro. - Trainer Sid Jacobs had a double, his Lark Sun winning the seventh race after having saddled Alfred Roberts Cobber in the fourth event. Alfred Roberts Cobber came from dead last to find an opening along the hedge in midstretch and pass Carolyn K. Stables pacemakihg Dark Patrol in the fourth event, scoring by a length. Louis Cheslers Mountain Ash was four and a half lengths behind Dark Patrol in third place. The winners time for the mile and a sixteenth over the turf was a tepid 1.46. Cobber, a six-year-old Bernborough gelding; returned 1.20 for his second victory of the season in seven attempts. He has been a steady performer on the grass since last fall, has had alternate good and bad races in ,500 company. Cobber is the first winner saddled by Sid Jacobs since the veteran trainer took over the Roberts string following the death of Jim East.
