. c : 0 VanBerg Duo Tops MRA Sprint Event Set Shot, Dagazha Slated To Engage Princess Trace, Four Others This Afternoon By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 16. Marion H. VanBergs Set Shot and Dagazha, head a field of seven quick sprinters scheduled to clash here Friday afternoon in the Vincent Legion Post Purse. Under the allowance terms of the six furlongs feature, Set Shot will go to the post under 110 pounds while Dagazha is to shoulder 114 pounds with the apprentice allowance. Jockey Lois Cook, leading rider at the current MRA meeting, will be at the reins on Set Shot while apprentice Johnny Sellers. Cooks nearest rival, is to guide Dagazha, who will make his 1955 seasonal debut. Others named for the Friday headliner are Mrs. George C. Whites Princess Trace, 107; Tamarack Stables Reb-Misha, 110, and George W. Morrisons Orchid, 108 pounds. Also W. W. Waters Bea Marony, 114, and Paper City Stables Whirling Blues, pegged at 111 pounds. Apprentice Bobby Robbins will handle Princess Trace in the sprint, Mike Basile is engaged for Reb-Misha, and Jimmy King rides Whirling Blues. Sebastian Perez, who has been showing excellent saddle form, is to guide Orchid. Fiye-Time Winner in 1954 Dagazha is no stranger to Motor City racing patrons. The VanBerg colt raced here last year, winning over quick company at the local course and at Hazel Park. Dagazha earned 6,675 while posting a "five-three-three" record. Clockers report that the Degage-sired colt has worked rather well for his initial outing of the current season. Set Shot, a five-year-old Barre Granite-sired gelding, gave a splendid performance here last week in the Plymouth High Twelve Purse, finishing second .to his stable-mate, Endon. Set Shot cut out all of the early pace and led right down to the final furlong before bowing to Endon in 1:11, which time was excellent over the prevailing good strip. In the band following the VanBerg duo to the wire in the Plymouth High Twelve were Bea Marony, a soundly-beaten third, and Reb-Misha, seventh. Major opposition for the favored VanBerg entry may be provided by Princess Trace. Although she was no better than fifth in the recently-decided Rose Leaves Stakes, the six-year-old Princequillo mare, had some excuse in that she began sluggishly. In a prior start, the White Stable mare ran third to VanBergs Foxe Jeanie and her own stable companion, Trip Lightly. She was good enough during her 1954 campaign to twice take the measure of the Irish -bred stallion, Bay Bloom, who went on to capture the historic Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs." v- Whirling Blues, a fashionably-bred four-year-old filly, the get of Whirlaway and Heavenly Blue, by Blue Larkspar, trained impressively for her initial public appearance of the year. Good winner in two of her 13 engagements in 1954, the Paper City Stable miss may take some beating Friday in the Vincent Legion Post Purse.
