Rome to Host 1960 Olympics; Generous Detroit Bid Fails PARIS, France, June 16 UP. The worlds Olympic officials clung to tradition in preference to an attractive financial offer from the United States today and awarded the 1960 classic to Rome. The ancient Italian capital was awarded the seventeenth modern Olympiad when it received 35 votes on the decisive third ballot, compared to 24 for Lausanne, Switzerland. Detroit lost out despite its unprecedented offer to pay the traveling expenses of all foreign athletes out of television proceeds from the games.
