Tonys Gem Gains Second Straight Fashions Own Pace to Beat Fondest and Golden Fiddle In Narragansett Headliner By FRED GALIANI NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 16. Tony Ferraras Tonys Gem scored his second straight victory at the meeting in the featured New London Purse here this sweltering afternoon, leading from the start to win by 14 lengths over Ralph Lentinis Fondest. Two lengths farther back was Dick DeStasios Golden Fiddle. They say a horse needs a race over the Gansett strip. Tonys Gem had had it when he finished eighth first time out. That must have prepped him, because he won his next start by a nose then came right back today by a good margin. Walter Mann, his regular rider, booted home over the mile and 70 yards in 1:43. The winning Royal Gem colt paid 4.00, much to the delight of his backers in the crowd of 7,904. Tonys Gem was winning his third start in 13 tries this year after a frustrating campaign in Florida in which he could not-hit the winners circle after being close a few times. Pinocchio Most Consistent This afternoon he bettered his previous effort, taking the lead at the start and turning back all challenges. The most persistent was Pinocchio, who dogged him right to the middle of the stretch where he finally had to yield. Fondest, who had been far back, finished on the outside to be second before Golden Fiddle. Mann rode a good race on the winner, shaking him up at the head of the stretch when it looked like opposition was developing, then hand riding him through the final sixteenth. The Daily Double was worth a lucrative 78.00 on the combination of Queens Ranchs Start Now and Merrimack Stables Fighting Low. The former set up the big pay-off when he got home- at a 7.60 mutuel. Enrique Gonzalez piloted the first winner home over J. Passarellis Platterette and E. Lowrances Flaming Bush. Earl Gross drove home Fighting Low in the second to beat out C. E. Buckleys Idealist and W. Powers Swampland. Gonzalez made it two for the day when he steered Mrs. S. G. Stecklers Saddle Saga home to a close decision over Odie Clel-lands Chicaro Boy. White Orchids Odds Advance had to withstand a foul claim to be named the winner of the fifth race, after beating R. Torres Nangaff and Corine Stables Expectant. Larry Adams, on the third horse, lodged a foul against the winner, which was eventually disallowed. Odds Advance, who was winning her first race of the year, paid 3.80 under "Speedy" Freddy Ryan.
