Tomorrows Chicagoan Draws 24 Sophomores Would Be Largest Field Eyer to Start at Washington If All Go WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., June 16. Racing secretary Pat Farrell was "deluged with entries for Saturdays Chicagoan this morning. Twenty-four three-year-olds were named for the 0,000 added race. This poses a problem for the management if owners of each of the eli-gibles should decide, to try for the purse with their representatives. The starting gate being used at. this course has but -14 stalls, while the auxiliary gate, pressed into use for bulky fields, is equipped with eight spaces. All of which leaves room for but 22 horses to be broken off from the machine and with little or no space to place horses on the outside. There seems to be little likelihood of the Chicagoan being run in two divisions. That would bring about an extra outlay of 0,000 by the management. On the other hand it appeared early Thursday afternoon as if there would be few if any withdrawals. All owners and trainers seemed to want to try for the "big one." A number of the sophomores entered for the Saturday feature do not appear to belong in the race, having been beaten in lesser company, but then again the horsemen seem to figure that anything can happen in a horse race, especially if the field is bulky. The largest field ever to run at Washington Park was a 19 -horse line-up in the Washington Park Handicap of 1951. The racing secretarjlisted the following as definite starters for the Chicagoan: Nances Lad, Traffic Judge, Honeys Alibi, Make Ready, Blue Lem, Top Traffic, Prince Noor, Dogoon, Munchausen, Daylight Express, Styrunner, Trim Destiny, Speed Rouser, Fleet Path, and Hi Jet. He regards the other nine as being doubtful. It costs nothing to pass the entry box for the Chicagoan, a fact that may account for the large list of potentials. Three candidates for the Chicagoan worked out this morning over a racing strip labeled "good." Trim Destiny, winner of the Arkansas Derby, breezed six furlongs in 1 : 15 with a half mile fraction of :48. Fleet Path worked a half mile in :48 handily, while Prince Noor went a half mile in :47 breezing.
