J. MURPHY n SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, III., May 10. — Felda, one of several horses that trainer T. W. Kelley brought to this cours£ from the large string of Mrs. Charles Silvers quartered at Washington Park, came through with an impressive score in the feature race here this afternoon. Ridden by Karl Korte, stable jockey who was accepting his second mount at this track, Felda, a five-year-old mare, bested the favored Squire Wilson by a nose following a longv hard stretch duel on a muddy track. Third money went to the extreme outsider, Rudys Valley, who came from last place at the stretch head. The winner paid 4.40. Sixty Two Shows the Way A field of six contested the mile and a sixteenth race and Sixty Two, unbeaten in his last three starts, set the pace, with Felda right alongside. Sixty Two showed the way for five furlongs and then displayed signs of fatigue* permitting the Silvers mare to get to the front. Once in the van Felda was challenged, almost immediately by Squire Wilson, who had been racing in third place, and the pair entered the stretch head and head, with Squire Wilson on the outside. They matched stride for stride all through the home lane and the winners mai-gin was quite scant. Rudys Valley was six lengths back of the leaders at the end, but beat Gallaride, the fourth horse, by eight lengths. The attendance on a gloomy, overcast afternoon was 8,881. The smallest Daily Double pay-off possible came about when Hap Glaudi won the second race and the return was 80.40. Hap Glaudi was the favorite, but the open- Continued on Page Forty-Two Felda Narrow Winner At Sportsmans Route Noses Out Squire Wilson After Long and Bitter Stretch Battle Continued from Page One ing event had been taken by Liability, an outsider who paid 4.60 straight. Jockey Tommy Barrow rode the winner of each end of the combination and the distance in each instance was six and one-half furlongs. Both horses won by good margins. The second straight favorite scored when Lacy Jacket clicked in the third. The filly j set most of the pace and held Earrows I mount, Jeep Flyer," in the stretch. Willie [ Cox rode Lacy Jacket in the six and one-.half furlong encounter. » Robert Ford piloted Fixed Charge, an outsider, to come from behind and score in the fourth. Astounding and Jalbopate, who finished second and third, respectively, alternated in setting the early pace but Fixed Charge easily passed them in the stretch. Jockey Howard Craig crept to within one winning mount of leading Tony Skoronski when he put up a good exhibition on Cortina to win the fifth. Cortina moved up on the extreme outside rounding the stretch turn and Craig won the event by cutting to the inside of the bearing out leader, Brooky, in the last sixteenth. Equal Strife, coming from last place, beat out Brooky for second place in the last stride.
