Paul Chandler Resigns Posts; With MRA Track Will TakevOyer Editorship of Two Weekly Newspapers in Area DETROIT, Michr, May 10.— Paur Chandler, vice-president and public relations director of the Michigan Racing Association since 1953, has announced his resignation. He thus became the fifth major official of the Detroit Race Course to leave his post within the last year. Chandler, a University of Michigan graduate and World War II Navy officer, left the MRA to take over the editorship of two local weekly newspapers. Together with William C. McKay, secretary of the MRA, Chandler has negotiated the purchase of the Plymouth Mail and the Livonian, two of Michigans largest weeklies. It is reported that Chandler and McKay paid more than 00,000 to buy the papers from publisher Sterling Eaton. The Livonian is published in the rapidly growing city of Livonia, site of the Detroit Race Course. Plymouth is a sister city, about five miles west of Livonia. In taking over the editorship of the weeklies, Chandler is returning to the newspaper field which he left in 1953 for his first and only race-track job. Formerly he had served with the Detroit bureau of the Associated Press and the Detroit News. Other changes "in the MRA staff within the last year have seen Pat Farrell replace Charles McLennan as racing secretary.. Jack Riggs succeed Jack Stephens as announcer and Robert G. Leavitt resign as general manager to become mutuels manager of the rival Hazel Park track. Lew Cromwell also resigned as track admissions manager as the late summer and fall dates received by MRA, this year conflicted with his duties as ticket manager at the Olym-pia Stadium. No successor has been named to Leavitt although Farrell will act as director of racing, taking over some of the former general managers duties. Since the MRA does not begin its 58-day meeting until Aug. 1, MRA is in no hurry to fill Chandlers post. It is believed that the track plans to hire a combination gen-~ eral manager-public relations director.
