Clean Trick Gains Nose Verdict in Route Event Takes Measure at Tetrabasic in Ascot Mile, Nine-Sixteenths Test By W. A. CRUSE ASCOT PARK. Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio., May 10. — Mrs. V. McKenneys Clean Trick, a six-year-old Equistone gelding, went a mile and nine-tixteenths in 3:04 flat to be a nose the best of G. Cohns Tetrabasic, in todays feature, the Hearts of Oaks Purse. Jockey Larry Grubb was his pilot, and kept him in hand in the early going then coming inside to the middle of the • track for the final bid furnished the fog and rained drenched patrons with a thrill-ingfinish. ~v Clean Trick was second choice in the betting to H. F. Lukas ShorS Line which set the early pace, and rewarded the supporters with a .20— .00 and .20 mutuel across the board. There is a bit of an interesting twist to the outcome of this race as Mrs. McKen- Contmued on Page Forty-Tw* Clean Trick Gains Nose Verdict in Route Event Takes Measure at Tetrabasic in Ascot Mile, Nine-Sixteenths Test Continued from Page One iiey bred both Tetrabasic and the winner. R. E. Heltzeis Good Old Pride, a five-year-old Pot oLuck gelding, graduated from the maiden ranks in the first race here this afternoon under the able handling oyer jockey Harold Walker. He apparently relished the fog and sloppy going and reached the wire two and one half lengths in front of P. Delorenzos Fire Proof. Though the fog was too dense to positively identify the colors down the back-stretch, Walker was prominent as he came out of the mist at the head of the stretch and under his late energetic handling the winner covered the six and one half furlongs in 1:32% to reward his few supporters with a 6.80 mutuel. The Primrose Stables Five Passes and jockey John Rivera accounted for the second half of the Daily Double. Favorite in the betting, a .00 win mutuel was posted, and the five-to-one combination was worth 27.40. R. TiVallins Peddie and Richard Gordon were considered as the outsiders in the betting of the third race, but they crossed the finish line a good length in front of their closest rival, War Vessels. It is a coincidence, but the same 6.80 Mutuel was posted for this winner as for the victor in the first race. A father and "son combination proved victorious in the fourth race when T. Gammon saddled Street Scene and Larry Gammon rode him to victory. Coming tu the extreme outside of the track where the , going was also sloppy but the footing much more firm, he had three parts of a length! on Mrs. D. Donaldsons Mine Bank. The latter was the favorite, while Street Scene paid 8. The Stout Hearts Purse, a mile and nine-sixteenth event for four-year-olds and upward holds the feature spot as fhe seventh event on an eight-race card. Under the * allowance conditions, hung up as ah extra by racing secretary Charles F. Henry, there are seven to vie for the ,500 purse. The Millcreek Farms Zop, will be trying-for a third victory at the meeting. The full son of Third Degree — Casa Manana was victorious in the Swaps Purse, his last engagement. For that mile and nine-sixteenth, jockey John J. Rivera had him three and one-quarter lengths the best of E- M. Benshoffs Brunswick over a slow track in 3:02%. Prior to that victory and at the same distance, he was a half length the best of J. Durnings From Afar. That was a ,000 to ,750 claiming affair, but the strip was fast and his time was a more commendable 2:47%. Third to Zop in the Swaps was the Gateway Stables Steppin Pappy, fourth was I*. Clapps Ethel Stone and T. E. Quisen-berrys Echo Rock was fifth in the seven-horse field. This trio is again slated to match strides tomorrow and it is difficult to accord a greater preference to any of them after the most recent encounter. Completing the feature field are A. Barrs Sentiment, I. F. and R. Wills Was A Man, and R. A. Pasquales Sent Back. j I [
