Hopeful Sam Vindicates Support With Easy Win Apprentice Mitchell Husser Rides Triple at Fairmount Park Course By J. J. HAHN FAERMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111./ May 10. — Performing to the expectations of a majority of the 4,314 patrons who installed him an odds-on favorite, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Tripletts Hopeful Sam scored an easy victory here Wednesday night in the six furlongs Carling Open Golf Tour-nahient Purse defeating Donal Schmidts Speed Wrinkle, H. H. Rendelmans Tiger Bee and five others, underua smooth ride by Clarence Meaux. Following home the leaders and in order were Wal-Dot-O, Sol-ero Jr., Select Barre, Royal Mon and Clynon. While Speed Wrinkle and Wal-Dot-O were making the early pace Meaux had his charge racing close to the leaders in third place as they went down the backstretch. By the time the last quarter of the dash was reached, the ultimate winner took over the runner-up position as Wal-Dot-O dropped back to fourth and Select Barre, moving up on the inside, took over third position. " Speed Wrinkle continued to show the way as they straightened out in the stretch, but Hopeful Sam was only breezing and as they reached the eighth post the Triplett representative collared the early leader. When Meaux let out a wrap the old fellow drew away at will and won by a pair of lengths. Speed Wrinkle was a trio of lengths before Tiger Bee who passed tired horses in the stretch and had a safe margin over the faltering Wal-Dot-O. Clynon, the second choice, while held at more than 7 to 1, was racing close up with the leaders when he dropped out of it suddenly and refused to extend himself after losing his prominent position. Hopeful Sam raced the fastest six fur- -longs of the meeting, turning the distance in the good time of l:113£_and had the veteran been pressed at any time could have bettered the mark. Apprentice Mitchell Husser starred in the saddle, scoring with three of his mounts while Meaux, in addition to winning with Hopeful Sam, also held the reins on the Silver Creek Farms Easy Sir, a locally owned and bred son of Mister Easy. Fridays feature is the Edwardsville Purse, a six furlongs dash for three-year-olds and upward and which drew the entries of eight possible starters. Expected to match strides in this_ sprint event are Col Con, Gin Tonic, Miss Kirkwood,. Eternal Sam, Moondog, Copper Island, Mr. Hash and Pima. - Another six furlongs dash, to be used as the sixth, is also made up of eight speedsters, while two-year-olds, under allowance conditions, are to race in the four and one-half furlongs fifth heat. Several winners at this meeting are entered.
