May 13.— Jockey John Heckmann got off to a good start here opening day when two of his mounts were successful in the first five races. Wind and Fog Mars Inaugural The Balmoral Jockey Club had very disagreeable weather for its inaugural program. A cold wind and damp fog made things uncomfortable for those exposed to the elements. Then rain began to fall following the third race. The track was deep in mud. The attendance was 9.380. The second and third races were run in fog so dense that it was impossible to see the horses until after they had passed mid-stretch. Southern Skies, winner of the second, came out of the heavy haze in third place to wear down the favored Supreme Music in the last sixteenth and complete a Daily Double that paid ,141.00. Southern Skies paid 5.20 to win and Liberty Street the first winner, paid 7.20. The Verb was out of the money. Talent Crop being second and Ronnies Jet, third. Ronnies Jet set the pace but Liberty Street was always well up and had the most power on end. The gelding was ridden by Gilbert Hernandez. Jerry Truman was on Southern Skies in the second race. Six went to the post in the third, with Club Chance, ridden by John Heckmann, scoring with ease. This time even the sixteenth pole was obscured by the fog, but Club Champ was well in advance of the others when they came into view. He won by five lengths over Choice Double. The fog lifted somewhat for the fourth, although the colors were not distinguishable from the far trun to the stretch turn. It was a two-year-old dash of five furlongs, and Ethel-Rita, a daughter of Revoked, owned by Mrs. Harry Trotsek, was a very easy winner, with Marcet second. Ethel-Rita was making her third start in the twelve-horse field.
