Bill Would Permit Shift Of Illinois Race Meets Also Would Provide 00,000 For Homebred Purses, Stakes SPRINGFIELD, 111.. May 13.— A bill has been introduced in the Illinois senate which would permit a race-track licensee to run its meeting at a track other than that owned by the licensee. The measure, sponsored by Sens. Arthur Bid will R.. River Forest , Morris E. Muhleman R.. Rock Island and George E. Drach R., Springfield*, thus would wipe out technicalities involved in presenting the Balmoral meeting at Washington Park. The Balmoral Jockey Club purchased the Lincoln Fields track at Crete, 111. a few years back but no racing has been held at the Crete plant due to its inaccessibility to Chicago. The transfers to Washington Park have been approved by the Attorney Generals office and the Illinois Racing Board. Other features of the pending bill would set aside one-half of the approximately ,000,000 received from license fees, administration taxes and miscellaneous receipts for encouraging thoroughbred breeding in the state. At the discretion of the Illinois Racing Board, this fund of 00.-000 would be made available for purses and stakes for Illinois-bred horses. If this measure is adopted, the Illinois Racing Board would be privileged to authorize nine-race daily programs at all tracks, making for a total of 54 races weekly instead of the present 51. In all, this W. would mean a total of 87 extra races at Chicago area tracks and 60 extra down-state. mile. 1:14% for the first six furlongs and the full mile in 1:4015- Gen. Duke seemed to run easily, but was nodding noticably and favoring his injured leg upon leaving the track. His declaration from the Preakness came in short order, once Jones was able to inspect the colt back at the barn. It is believed that the stable still hopes to have him ready for the Belmont Stakes on June 15. Several minutes after Gen. Duke moved off stage, jockey Oliver Cutshaw broke Iron Liege from in front of the stads. Guiding I the Bull Lea colt well off the rail, Cutshaw ,had him under restraint and was waved down during the last furlong, yet Iron Liege still went in 1:37%, just a tick off June Grasss ancient local standard. The Derby winners fractions were :24 for the quarter mile, :47ys for the half mile, 1:12% for the three-quarters, 1:371s for the mile, and he galloped out a mile and an eighth in 1:52 y5. Jones was quoted later as saying that he had intended Iron Liege to go about "40 and change," but that he didnt think the move was unduly severe. Nah Hiss and Promised Land finished one-two in that order in a four-horse, mile and one-eighth race at Jamaica last Friday, Nah Hiss the victor by half a length. The two trainers, Chester Ross and Hirsch Jacobs, were pleased sufficiently with the performances and the way the colts came out of the race to send them to Baltimore. Nah Hiss, who seems to run best just off the pace, is to be ridden by Bobby Usserjr. Continued m Page Forty-Fin i I I | I Iron Liege Works Mile In 1 374/s for Preakness Gen. Speaking from New York, Gallant Mans trainer, Johnny Nerud, told this reported that he didnt want to rush his horse, and that his next engagement might come in the mile and one-eighth Peter Pan at Bel- jmont Park on June 1. Gallant Man could follow up this race with an appearance in the Belmont Stakes on June 15. "I wouldnt be afraid to run him on the grass, either," Nerud added. "He is eligible for the 00,- 000 American Derby on the turf at Washington Park August 31 and he might very well go in that one. After all, hes from Irish stock and thats what they run on over there." Wells said that x-rays would be taken on Tuesday to determine the extent of High Sparkles injury. The capable young horseman noted that his colt seemed to be a little improved this morning, but that in any event he would not race in the immediate future. Although High Sparkle, bred and owned by Monmouth Park president Amory Haskell, has been sparingly campaigned five starts, he was being pointed specifically for the Preakness since he came out of winter quarters at Columbia, S. C. Stephens, One-Eyed Kings conditioner, seemed well pleased with the way his horse accomplished the mile in 1:38*5 this morning. "He worked out a mile and one-eighth in 1:52," Stephens noted. "I want to see the results of Bold Rulers race today and 1 think I may breeze King again on Thursday. Then Ill confer with Captain "Harry" Guggenheim and we should arrive at a definite decision toward the end of the week. Its only a short van down from New York if we want to come. Id only start one. Lucky Dip doesnt quite seem to measure up at this time." Federal Hill, who checked in from Louisville by van on Friday, shipped in good order, but apparently is not to be considered a 100 per cent certain starter in the Preakness, although he is more likely to go 1 than not. The speedy son of Cosmic Bomb j and Ariel Beauty is also staked in several other eastern events to be run in the immediate i future, and could conceivably s appear in one of these if the Preakness does not shape up to the liking of the colts interests. i In trainer Milton Riesers absence «hes 1 looking after a large string in Kentucky 1 his son, Stanley, is supervising Federal |J Hills activities here. However the senior Rieser may fly up to saddle the colt, should he run on Saturday. Mr. Fitz, Bold Rulers trainer, is also an absentee, with the veteran Bart Sweeney deputizing for the grand old man of the American turf. Sweeney displayed Bold Rulers blinkers to reporters this morning, the hood consisting of half cups with long, narrow slots cut at the rear of each blinker.
