Baltimore, Md., May 13.— Developments pertaining to Saturdays 81st running of the historic Preakness Stakes broke dramatically on several fronts this hectic, humid afternoon. Skimming the news briefly: 1. Calumets Kentucky Derby winner Iron Liege, and its Florida Derby winner. Gen. Duke, both worked a mile between the first and second races, with Gen. Duke apparently pulling up "gimpy." Both raced evenly and seemingly without effort. Iron Liege clocked in a sensational 1:374,5, just a fifth of a second off a 34-year-old track record, and Gen. Duke in l:40*s. After examining Gen. Duke back at the barn, trainer Jimmy Jones declared him from the Preakness. By way of comparison, it might be noted that Calumets Fabius, last years winner, required 1:38 to complete the first mile of the 1956 Preakness. One-Eyed King Possibility 2. Mrs. Jules Schwartz Nah Hiss and Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Promised Land arrived by van from New York to participate in the middle jewel of racings Triple Crown for three-year-olds. , 3. Ralph Lowe, owner of the Kentucky Derby second. Gallant Man, announced in Texas that his English-bred son of Migoli would miss the Preakness. 4. Harry Wells, trainer of Woodland Farms High Sparkle, reported from Camden, N. J. that the colts right front ankle filled following his race in last Saturdays Delaware Valley Stakes at Garden State Park and that he would be unable to fulfill his engagement in the "Run for the Black Eyed Susans." 5. Thus, with situation in a highly fluid state, some seven horses must now be considered as possible starters in the Pimlico classic. They are Iron Liege, Bold Ruler, Federal Hill, Inswept, Promised Land. One-Eyed King and Nan Hiss. The moves of the Calumet horses were easily the hightlights of the days events. Gen. Duke, who was declared from the Kentucky Derby the morning of the race because of a bruised left front heel, took to the track first under exercise boy Joe Swart. Racing a half dozen feet off the rail, the son of Bull Lea and Wistful was caught in :2435 for the quartev, :49% for the half
