Gay Drakes fine four-year-old-Swoons Son, undefeated in three dirt stakes this year, takes to the grass against 1955 grass champion, St. Vincent, and 13 others in Balmorals third running of the 8,650 Continental Turf Handicap Saturday. The popular four-year-old son of The Doge, who in successive starts captured the Churchill Downs, La Salle and Citation handicaps under 128, 130, and 131 pounds, respectively, again must pack top burden of 128 pounds in the one mile and one-eighth Continental, Chicagos first major grass attraction of 1957. St. Vincent, property oi George Gar-liner, looms as Swoons Sons No. 1 challenger. The English-bred grass specialist makes his Chicagoland bow Saturday under second high weight of 121 pounds. Hasty House Trying for Third Straight Hasty House Farm, winner of the only two previous runnings of the Continental Turf with Mister Black and Summer Solstice, will be represented by the entry of Platan and the stretch-running Bryn, winner of last Saturdays Hawley Purse at one and one-sixteenth miles on the grass. If all 15 start, the winner will net 7,175 of the 8,650 gross. Although trying the grass for the first time this year, Swoons Son is no stranger to the turf. In fact he was undefeated in two starts on the grass as a three-year-old setting a new track record of 1 :42- for one and one-sixteenth miles here, then winning the one and three-sixteenths miles American Derby over a good field of three-year-olds that included Needles. He has won 20 of 28 starts, the last six in a row, and has earned 91,430 to be ranked tenth among the all-time money-winning thoroughbreds. A victory Saturday will vault him past Needles and into the ninth position. Last Saturday, Swoons Son thrilled the patrons with a nose triumph over Sea O Erin in a four-horse blanket finish to win the Citation Handicap at one mile over an "off" strip.. Now in his third year of racing, Swoons Son has lost only one race at either Arlington Park or Washington Park, that being last years one mile Sheridan here to Ben A. Jones. Last year Swoons Son won the Arlington Classic and American Derby to notch runner-up spot behind Needles as . the nations three-year-old champion. St. Vincent has worked well for Saturdays Continental. The six-year-old went six f urlongs on the grass Tuesday in 1:12. He has started only six times this year, with his lone victory over the grass in the Washingtons Birthday Handicap last February at Santa Anita. He was unplaced as one of the favorites in the San Juan Capis-trano won by Corn Husker. His latest was a fourth in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico. Jockey Larry Gilligan rides St. Vincent for the first time. Bryn Coming Off Victory Bryn was an impressive winner here on the grass last Saturday as the English im- port turned in his characteristic stretch charge to win going away from The War- rior and North Cone at a sixteenth shorter than Saturdays Continental. It was his first win in five starts this year. Sir Tribal returns to the grass Saturday and figures to turn in an improved per- formance over last week ends 10th place Citation finish. Last year, Sir Tribal won both the Balmoral Turf and Stars and Stripes Handicaps on the grass and was second to Summer Solstice in the Conti- nental Turf. He has won two of four starts this year. Platan, winner of the 1955 Arlington Handicap in American turf record time, has failed to click since that race. He has made a dismal showing in last Saturdays- Hawley Purse. The Warrior, second to Swoons Son in last years grass American, Derby, was second to Bryn here last Sat- urday in the Hawley, the third start this year for the four-year-old. He won his only other Balmoral start at six furlongs. Blue Choir, third in both the 1955 and 1956 runnings of the Continental, has not been performing up to par of late. The Irish horse was fourth in last Saturdays HaWley Purse, prior to which he was a good third behind Akbar Khan and Jabneh in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico. He has won one race in nine starts this year, and that a dirt event. In 1-955 Blue Choir won the Balmoral Turf Handicap. -Saeed Rouser has been reaping good re- suits this year and comes off a fifth in last Saturdays Citation the 11th start this year. He has won four races, including three straight handicaps at the Fair Grounds. Munchausen was a close-up fourth in last Saturdays Citation, the 11th start this year for the improved Mighty Story horse, who won his first stake in 1954. This will be Munchausens first grass start. He won the Louisville Handicap this year. Sunningdale is a good grass runner. He was second to "Espea in the Bougainvillea Turf Handicap at Hialeah but was disqualified from purse money. His only score in eight starts was over the grass early this year at Hialeah. He was sixth in last weeks Citation. North Cone was third in last weeks Hawley after setting the pace. High King has a win and a third to show for two Balmoral starts this year and makes his first grass start. Bernburgoo was unplaced in the Citation, prior to which he was an easy winner at one mile at Churchill Downs. He, too, makes his frist start on the grass. Full Flight has won three of 13 starts this year, , while Volition is winless in four tries. I . ! ! i ! 3 1 ; , j , . : ; , ; , ! ! : . ;
