Wise Margin Is Second To Fire King at Suffolk Odds-on Choice Fails in Seasonal Bow, but Closes Stoutly in Sprint By TEDDY COX SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 31. Samuel Tufanos "iron horse," Wise Margin, made his annual bow before a crowd of 12,846 here this afternoon and was backed down into odds"-on favoritism, but the seven-year-old stallion was not equal to the task and finished second in the Newton Purse. It was a creditable race, though, one that should prepare him. for-his long series of stakes engagements on schedule. Winner of the dash of six furlongs was Fire King, a six-year-old stallion by War Jeep Sidi Barrani, by Sir Gallahad m. He is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dennis, of Thomaston, Conn., who race under the hom de course of the White Fence StaVle. Fire King stepped over distance in 1:11 and paid 4.80. In third place was E. Hogans Cut Out, while Paisley Farms Noted was fourth. Fire King recently finished second here at a mile and 70 yards. He was smartly ridden by Carroll Bierman, who found room between horses through the late stages to achieve his goal. Wise Margin, who spent his winter on. a New Jersey farm, last raced in the two miles and one-sixteenth Pimlico Cup, which he won in easy style. Todays comparative abbreviated distance, was a far cry from j such a long grind, but the stout fellow proved his worth and his versatility. Loose Lip, one noted for his sharp early speed, Cut Out, Squash and Kingtown waged one of the hottest fights of the season for the early lead and as they approached the far turn it was virtually impossible to separate them. However, Loose Lip forged into a clear advantage approaching the stretch and his early adversaries tired, while Fire King and Wise Margin began to pick up speed. Bierman made his challenge nearing the eighth pole, and the stallion dashed into a quick advantage. Wise Margin, in the meantime, had been allowed to lag. He was close enough at the top of the stretch for a dangerous challenge, but it was never really forthcoming while he passed a band of tired horses.
