1 Country News Successful In Cahokia Holiday Event Wears Down Tiger Kate to Gain Major Honors; Rain Mars Program By J. J. IIAIIN CAHOKIA DOWNS, East St. Louis, HI., May 31. Favored by a track turned sloppy after the running of the fourth race and lots of racing luck Fred Malorrus Country News -won the five-furlong Memorial Day Purse here Thursday afternoon before 8,700 racing fans who entered the plant under ideal conditions but were forced to run for cover before the running of the fifth race. Country News, ridden by J. R. Vinson, practically stole the headliner when he got through next to the inside rail at the head of the stretch and finally wore down Tiger Kate, the early leader, to win by a length. Donald Sea, the extreme outsider, was third, four lengths to the rear of Tiger Kate. Hy Bill B., Tiganna, Demon Bo and Gilded King completed the remainder of the field and finished in that order. Tiganna was installed the public choice but shortly after the start gave evidence that she disliked the condition of thS racing strip. The secondary was the Poppy Purse, a one mile spin that saw Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Pay-tons improved Wise Billing winning her third victory of the meeting. The daughter of Billings made a show of her field under Lenny Mills who eased the mare the last 20 yards of the event and despite the ease in which she won her margin at the end was five lengths. Validity, making his first start at this meeting, was second and Mucho Frio saved the minor award. Miss Burke, the second choice to Mucho Frio, opened a long early lead over her opponents but after going six furlongs found the remaining quarter too far and staggered home in fourth position. After winning the main event with Country News, Vinson came back hand copped the eighth race with Major Tee who made each post a winning one. Horsemen with the better grade horses remained away from the entry box and it resulted in Van Zandt haviing to go with an all-claiming card for the week end. The most interesting on the nine-race program for tomorrow is the seventh race. It is at seven furlongs and brings together Paddys Pal, Pensive Song, Cleetsie, Ziggity, Golden King, Jahar and Direct North. Prospects are for a muddy or heavy racing strip for the Saturday night racing. It was still raining this afternoon and indications were for more of the same tonight or tomorrow.
