Record Crowd of 19,590 At Ak-Sar-Ben Memorial Day AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., May 31. To say an all-time record throng of 19,590 crowded into Ak-Sar-Ben on Memorial Day would not be entirely correct. Although the Center Street plant did play host to the largest single-day gathering in its history, the patrons were not crowded. The added area afforded by the new concourse constructed this year, let the large holiday crowd move about freely with no ruffling of tempers brought on by too many people in too small a space, which has been the case with much smaller attendance figures in previous years. The mutuel handle for the nine-race program was 01,047. This total was the largest ever registered on Memorial Day, but all previous records were on eight races. After eight races Thursday the handle was above the previous record high of 62,924, therefore the day must be considered the best Memorial Day that the track has ever enjoyed.
