Balmoral By J. J. Murphy Church and Burr Enjoy Holiday Picnic Manteau Impressive in Domino Victory Continental Renewal Tops Todays Card WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., May 31. it was a Memorial Day picnic for jockey Ken Church here yesterday and Charlie Burr also got in on the party. The boys had quite a ball for themselves, Church riding ! four winners and Burr three. For Church it was a banner day, as among his successful mounts was the three-year-old Manteau, winner of the featured Domino Stakes. The son of Citation and bred by his owner,. Louis Lee Hag-gin II, was connecting in his first stake. He was third in the Blue Grass Stakes this year. Last sea- son as a two-year-old, Manteau started four times but failed to win. Like his sire, he is a hard-running stretch horse and was a little late reaching his best form. He graduated from the maiden ranks in April at Keeneland just prior to his Blue Grass effort, and his try in the Domino stamps him as one to watch. A good-sized crowd was present to view Manteau in victory. However, the attendance was less than on the two previous Memorial Days of the Balmoral-at-Wash-ington meeting The pari-mutuel business on the day . was "down. although it went over the ,000,000 mark. In the two previous years the .Citation Handicap for older horses was the featured attraction on this particular Jioliday and therefore was regarded as a greater attraction than the Domino. Johnny Adams Pays a Visit The Continental Turf Handicap is to be renewed here Saturday. For the past two seasons it has been taken by Hasty House Farm runners, with Johnny Adams up in each instance. Incidentally, Adams was at the track this morning looking a wee bit fatigued following his operation of last week. The little man will not be able to accept mounts for about three weeks. ... A first here Memorial Day was the victory of the three-year-old Lejo in the opening race. The grey colt is the first horse ever owned by Mrs. Josephine Jucus, who, in partnership with her sisters, operates a restaurant in Chicago. . . . Burr continues to show the way to the riders at this session, and it was announced this , morning that he would have the mount on Marooned in Wednesdays Honeymoon Handicap, which is for fillies and mares three years and older. Another jockey assigned for the Honeymoon is John Heckmann, who is second to Burr in the standings. Heckmann will ride highweighted Estacion, owned by Marion VanBerg. Estacion won the Suwanee River Handicap at Gulf-stream Park during the winter. Arnold Winick, who successfully campaigned a sizable string in eastern Canada last summer, will again make the trip this year although not until rather late. . . . Chuck Parke, who is assistant to his brother, trainer Ivan Parke, is -in charge of the three-year-old Greek Game and 17 others coming from Montgomery, Ala. They are owned by Fred W. Hooper and are expected to arrive next week. Greek Game was the two-year-old sensation of Chicago racing early last year. . . . Almas Heart, the tacer which Dave Erb said headed Swoons Son on that very foggy day on which the La Salle Handicap was run, has been shipped to Hazel Park along with a half-dozen others. And the thought arises what happened to Sea O Erin in the fog that afternoon? He wound up fifth in the La Salle, but was with Swoons Son all the way in last Saturdays Citation. jj . Ship Handelman String to ThistleDown All horses in the stable of C. S. Handelman have been shipped to ThistleDown in the care of trainer E. E. Russell. . . . Tommy Trotter is passing out the Monmouth Park stake blanks. . . . The two-year-old Royal Stag was St. Vincents travelling companion on his trip here. . . . Socar Pine arrived from Hazel Park. Races for T. A. Grissom. . . . Following a nice Memorial Day, rain fell at this course again Friday morning and a number of horses entered for a fast track had to be withdrawn. . . . Mary V. Fisher, of Detroit, usually comes up with a useful runner each year, and the three-year-old Solution may be the answer this season. The - gelding has simply aired in each of his . two races at this meeting. St. Vincent, who had his biggest season in 1955 when he won the San Gabriel Handicap, San Juan Capistrano, and Washington Birthday Handicap at Santa Anita, as well as the Dixie in Maryland, returns to the racing wars Saturday in the Continental Turf Handicap. Vance Longden is here to saddle him. Was the grass champion two years ago. . . . Duffy Cornell departed for the West Coast after having paid his first visit to Chicago in 25 years. . . . The annual press party will be held at Arlington Park June 9, at which tjme the boys will inspect the improvements to the plant since last year. It is expected that executive director Benjamin F. Lindheimer, now on the West Coast, will be among those present. - c
