Barbizon Barbizon Has Has Nine Nine Rivals Rivals in in Kent; Kent; Balmoral Balmoral Feature Feature to to Good Good Gesture Gesture Gives Inswept, Four Fathoms Poundage at Delaware Track Champion Juvenile of 1956 Also Has Gama, Tenacious, Wassail as Fit Contenders By PALMER HEAGERTY DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., May 31. Barbizon, who gained titular honors among the 1956 juveniles, will endeavor to fill the breach in the powerful three-year-old division of Mrs.. Gene Markeys Calumet Farm when he carries highweight of 126 pounds in tomorrows 20th running of the 5,000 added Kent Stakes. With Gen. Duke and Iron Liege currently on the shelf, the Polynesian Good Blood colt is left to go it alone in this mile and one-sixteenth affair which will find the successful thoroughbred netting 6,050 of the 6,550 winners share of the purse. While operating under the guidance of Eldon Nelson tomorrow, Barbizon. will be conceding six pounds to Roslyn Farms Inswept and nine pounds to Howell E. Jacksons Four Fathoms. The remainder of the starters, each of whom will carry 111 pounds, are: Cain Hoy Stables Lucky Dip,-John S. Kellys Wassail, William G. Helis Jr.s True Verdict, Cary C. Bpshamers Gama, Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Roscoe Maney, Joe W. Browns Tenacious and Glenelg Stables Assemblyman. Garden State Big 1956 Success Barbizon gained his recognition last season largely through his victory in the rich Garden State Stakes, the climax of a campaign which saw him accomplish five tories in six starts and finish second oh the other occasion. He was retarded in his training during the winter and was forced to by-pass such lucrative events as the Flamingo nd Florida Derby. He reached the races at Gulfstream Park but was unimpressive and failed to win in three outings. He was again idle for two months, then came out at Garden State to win easily in the mud with a mile and one-sixteenth in 1:45. This was sufficient to earn him a starting position in the Jersey Stakes, the race which was won by his stablemate Iron Liege. Barbizon was a dull- running ninth in the 11-horse field but there is reason to believe that he will show improvement in the Kent. " Inswept and Four Fathoms gained stakes victories in Maryland during the spring season, the former taking the Chesapeake, after Four Fathoms had been successful in the Chesapeake Trial. Inswept returned to run Bold Ruler to a length in the Preak-ness Prep, then was soundly beaten by that colt while sixth in the important -Maryland fixture. Four Fathoms turned in a miserable effort in the Chesapeake but came back to be second at a mile and one-sixteenth at Jamaica. Joe Culmone will handle Inswept tomorrow, while Pete Anderson, who is also named astride Lucky Dip, probably will ride Four Fathoms. The entry of Lucky Dip came as somewhat of a surprise, in that Pete Anderson has accepted the mount on Four Fathoms. Should he compete, the Cain Hoy colt would rate serious consideration, having been fourth behind Iron Liege in the Jersey following a winning effort at the same track. True Verdict, the most sensational "morning glory" in Florida during the past winter, is considered primarily a sprinter and in his last appearance was fourth behind King Hairan and others in the Delaware Valley, in which he was beaten four and a half lengths in 1:10. He is capable of outrunning tomorrows opposition should his handlers elect to have him compete in such fashion. Oliver Cutshaw will do the riding. Tenacious, Roscoe Maney and Assemblyman were transferred from New York for the Kent. Tenacious and Roscoe Maney were first and third, respectively, in a recent Jamaica offering, being separated by Four Fathoms.. Assemblyman was fourth in a five-horse sprint won by Out to Win. Ray Broussard will handle Tenacious, while Dick Lawless and Steve Brooks avre named for Roscoe Maney and Assemblyman. WILLIAM G. HELIS JR. Is represented in todays Kent Stakes by the homebred j True Verdict.
