Switch On Gets Commonwealth Call Sprint at Suffolk Has Field of Six Viscount, Pine Echo, Lord Jeep Get Weight Concession To Make for Rousing Race By ELI CHIAT SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 31. In returning to the scene of his early victories, Gerald Coleila and James Formas Switch On will pick up highweight of 126 pounds as. he attempts to spot five rivals from five to 15 pounds in the 0,000 Commonwealth Handicap, six furlongs feature event on Saturdays program. Slated to face the six-year-old gelded son of Condiment Tactic are Reginald Websters Viscount, 121; Eddie Siravos Pine Echo, 118; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Lihgles Lord Jeep, 116; Peter Fullers Oclirock, 116; and M. L. Stuckers Bonanza Miss, 111. While this 22d running of the Commonwealth failed to attract a large field, it surely boasts several high class speedsters. All have been winners this year, and under the weight arrangements, a rousing horse race appears in the offing, with the winner eligible to come from any quarter. Switch On, no doubt, earns his high allotment through his ability over the past two years, not so much on what he has shown since leaving Florida. He owns two "victories this year, one at Hialeah where he accounted -for the Palm Beach Handicap, and the other at Lincoln Downs, scoring in an" allowance race at seven furlongs. Since then he was the unsuccessful favorite in the Lincoln Special, finishing fifth, six lengths behind winning Paper Tiger. Started on Road to Fame at Suffolk He came out of the Special with a few minor nicks in both rear and front legs, but has been going well in training hours. It was here at .the Downs that Switch On first developed his potential as a two-year-old, giving promise to the success which followed in his later campaigns, when he was considered a top handicap performer 4n Florida and New York. Viscount arrived here with a creditable record, assimilated at Jamaica and Florida in his 1957 campaign. In 19 starts this year, Viscount has a pair of triumphs, three seconds and a like number of thirds against high class sprinters. In his latest start, the Springfield Purse -at Jamaica, he was beaten a length by Bunnys Babe and Golden East over a sloppy racing strip. Prior to that effort, he defeated Mr. Haw-ley and Passyunk at six furlongs while carrying 119 pounds, two more than his assignment tomorrow. His other notable efforts include a second to the highly regarded Decimal, and a third behind Jutland. Pine Echo, winner of his only New England outing, returns here after an unsuccessful invasion of New York. He was dusted off there in a pair of engagements after showing his usual high speed. It is a cinch that nobody will outrun him from the gate. Last year in 18 starts, the four-year-old Pinebloom colt won six races, and finished in the money on seven other occasions. Lord Jeep, an arrival from Maryland, has been unplaced only once in his eight starts this year. That disappointing effort came in his last start at Laurel. Previously he won two allowance races, finished second three times and third twice. He turned in an excellent 1956 record during the course of the New England season, when he won six out of his 15 starts. Oclirock, winner of a pair of handicaps at Lincoln Downs, was sent to Fullers New Hampshire farm for freshening up several weeks ago, and comes up to the Commonwealth a fit and fresh horse. He failed to turn in a bad race during the course of the Lincoln meeting. Bonanza Miss was beaten a head by Motor Line in her only start of the season. At Gulfstream Park this winter, she won two straight, defeating Miss- Erlen and Jovial Jove among others. She raced six furlongs in a creditable 1:10 in accounting for her last victory.
