Regard Port Call Choice to Repeat Co-Featured Sprint Draws • Smoke Screen, Roman Boss, Sharpsburg, Precious Stone By Staff Correspo7ident ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 20. — The seventh running of the ,745 Arlington Park Hurdle Stakes, annual opening-week event, features Fridays nine-race program. It is the only chance Chicago fans will have to see jumpers in action over .the tne obstacles of the grueling two-mile grass route. The event, jointly sponsored by the Arlington Park Jockey Club and the Midwest Hunts Racing Association, goes as the third race. Seven jumpers were named through the entry box, including last years winner, Port Call, owned by Mrs. Harry Rhett of Birmingham, Ala.; the entry of Calvin Houghlands Colonel V. and Johns Hour, West Wind Farms Expedient, Burford Danners Jamaica Boy, E. L. Lotz Local Run, and J. Arthur Reynolds Farmers Joy. Co-feature is the ,500 Sansovind, a seven furlongs allowance spin for three-year-olds and up, going as the eighth race. It drew eight horses, including Reyerie Knoll Farms" veteran, Smoke Screen; Calumet Farms Sharpsburg, H. L. Freyns Roman Boss, Joseph Gavegnanos High King, Rebel Stables Super Devil, Mrs. Harvey C. Fruehaufs Precious Stone, E. R. Morris Alibilt." and Maplewood Farms Picafriend. Qualifications for Starting All hurdle stakes starters must have qualified during the year by running in steeplechase meetings under the auspices of the Midwest Hunts Racing Association. Eachstarter must have started in at least two events and have acquired sufficient points in competition along the circuit to be eligible for Fridays event. Port Call was a ten lengths winner in last years Arlington Hurdle Stakes, when he took the lead after the first half mile and handled his opposition with great ease. Local Run -finished fourth in that renewal, some 28 lengths back, while Jamaica Boy was a far distant seventh. Smoke Screen returns to the racing wars Friday, starting over the strip where hes scored many a remarkable victory. The eight-year-old gelding won the 1954 edition of the Equipoise Mile, was second the following year. Sharpsburg comes off a victory two weeks ago at Garden State Park, the colts initial win this yeas in four starts. Earlier he, was second in a Pimlico sprint. Precious Stone was fourth here opening day behind Deep Breath and Sagacity at seven furlongs, marking his tenth start-this year. He has been racing well of late and has one win and five thirds for his efforts. Roman Boss failed the last time out as the favorite at Balmoral, when he was unable to do better than third behind Gallant Run and Shy Peg at six furlongs. Earlier he was an easy winner at that meeting. Super Devil is winless in seven starts this year. His last out found him sixth behind Two Fisted in a Balmoral sprint. Prior to that he went unplaced in the one-mile Citation Handicap, won by Swoons Son. Picafriends last start was a fifth in the Honeymoon Handicap at Balmoral. It was the fourth outing this season for the filly, who earlier was a good-going third behind Roman Boss and Marooned in a Homewood sprint. High King has only one win in eight starts this year, that a five-length triumph at one mile at Balmoral a month ago. Bushels Beam Consistent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 20. — Julray Stables Bushers Beam is a consistent sprinter over the Monmouth Park oval. The six-year-old son of Mr. Busher made his first start here on June 13, running six furlongs in l:10J/5 with 119 * pounds up, and yesterday, with the same weight, scored again in 1:10%. i — -,
