1 Mrs. Hellen Comes Right Back at Suffolk Downs Takes Measure. of Better Grade Rivals in Principal Offering By TEDDY COX SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 20. — Fuller Mclver Pricketts Mrs. Hellen moved up the class ladder a peg or two in the Variety Club of New England Purse here this afternoon, but she made a "good" track appear lightning fast by opening a vast lead, then holding on to score by a diminishing length and three-quarters. West, owned by the estate of C. J. Mos-carelli, was the favorite for the six furlongs spin. She was devoid of her usual early speed, but came on in the late stages to gain the place. J. H. Carrs Refrigreique was third ahead of Dover Stables Colonel Ed. The others in the six-horse field were Discard and False Pride. Mrs. Hellen, who won her most recent try with a ,000 claiming tag, raced the distance -in 1:11%. She stepped the first quarter in :22%, the half in : 45 1/5 and the five-eighths in :57. The * sparkling fractional carried her far in the van, at one point being as much as nine lengths. The filly started to shorten up somewhat in the final eighth, however, and George Gibb did not take any chances as he pumped away to assure victory. West, who was an odds-on favorite in her most recent start against similar company, raced more kindly in the Variety Club. Different strategy was employed here, and, instead of folding up badly she was full of run in the late stages. She was up in the" very last stride to gain the place. A crowd of 9,522 was on hand to witness the well-balanced program. David DeRoin, as usual, was the star rider, piloting a pair of winners through the feature to increase his margin over his fellow riders. The temperature was still high enough, but apparently yesterdays rains broke the sweltering heat wave. • j
