Rex Ellsworth has just completed a major culling of his broodmare band, giving some away, sending others to Arizona, and diverting still another group to his quarter horse stallion, Bob Jr. "Well use the offspring with a bit of cold blood to develop horses to ride ourselves and for general ranch work," explains Ellsworth. A letter from Dr. George Bendlage, of Lindsay, saying he has found the Lindsay-Porterville-Springville-area of the San Joaquin Valley one of the finest natural thoroughbred farm regions in the wholg state. "The foothills provide some of the strongest grass "In the countiy," says Bendlage, "and the setting is superb. I am breeding in a small way and looking for mares of specific breeding, price being no object. While we have but five mares now, we have reason for all of them, and the future will prove or disprove the validity of those reasons." . . . Dr. Bendlage has two yearlings approved for the Del Mar vendue, a colt by Scorpion II. and a filly by Bolero. . . . Caliente is carding a special program of racing for the Fourth of July, always a big day south of the border. . . . The sports editor of the El Paso Times, paying his first visit to Ruidoso in New Mexico, Avrote that, "Ruidoso will become the biggest track between Louisville and California." That includes Chicago, Omaha and Denver, but even though his observation was a bit grandiose, it provides a clue to the spirit and enthusiasm with which Ruidoso stages its racing programs, and the track,. -which hit a new record last summer of better than a five-rmillion-dollar season, if present trends continue, could hit six this year. Dr. Charles Strub of Santa Anita will visit New York and other eastern turf capitals during September. Hes given up the idea of going to Europe now that Godolphin Darley of Paris is representing Santa Anitas interests on the continent and in England and Ireland. ... A mile in 1:32 is a theoretical possibility for Hollywood Parks miracle oval, what with run-df-the-mill stake horses shading 1:34 in travelling the distance or running that fast in a fractional time of a longer race. . . . Bill Black, of La Jolla Farms, has cut down his -broodmare holdings to six good ones, and has cut the size of his farm acreage, turning over unneeded portions to subdividers. . . - The Pie King, who is finally making good as a race horse in America, after an unfortunate series of incidents at two, is rated a strong contender for the 00,000 net guaranteed to winner Gold Cup. Jockey Willie Shoemaker is definitely committed to an eastern campaign for most of the year following Hollywood Park, going first to Washington Park, then will try the New, York-New Jersey wheel. . . . His patron at Washington Park, Meshach Tenney, will have a . light stable there this August, with Times Ace being his top two-year-old stakes hope, despite what you have read about The Shoe, and with Nobbins his next best prospect. . . . The National Association of Race Track Chemists are asking for 0,000 for a research project into drug detection, but admit that even half a million dollars would not guarantee any real progress or advancement in the science as it now stands. It could, but no guaranty would go with the money. . . . A TRPB check on new owners includes a credit investigation, a neighborhood investigation if warranted, a perusal of local county police blotters, and a personal check with the references given. . . . Fingerprints, how- . ever, are the only sure way well, almost sure to tab a man with a record in a far-away state. Mile Oaks Newest Del Mar Stakes Eddies Reads press brochure has been distributed to newsmen, and lists the Del Mar Oaks, 5,000 added at a flat mile, as the one new important stakes on the roster. And wed forgotten all about it, but the records for the Del Mar Handicap, the prestige race of the summer for older horses, was won in 1947 by Iron Maiden, dam of the Kentucky Derby winner, Iron Liege, and dam of Iron Reward, she, in turn, dam of Swaps. . . .
