Zarathustra, With Lester Piggott Up, Wins 20-Furlong Gold Cup at Ascot Americn-Owned Cambremer Is Second; Favored Tissot - Third in English Fixture Special to Daily Racing Form ASCOT HEATH, Berkshire, England, June 20 Reuters . — American owner Ralph Strassburgers French-trained four-year-old, Cambremer, was beaten into second place today by Terence Grays six-year-. old, Zarathustra, in the Gold Cup, richest and. most coveted prize of the four-day Royal Ascot meeting. Cambremer, winner of the 1956 St. Leger, finished a length and one-half behind his conqueror in the 8,500 stakes, run over a 20-furlongs course. Lester Piggott, riding a well-judged finish on Zarathustra, struck the front two furlongs from home and held off the challenge of Fred . Palmer on Cambremer. Marchese Incisa Della-Rocchettas Italian challenger, Tissot, stable companion of the unbeaten wonder horse, Ribot, was made the ,5-to-2 favorite, but could only finish third among the nine runners, half a length behind Cambremer. Jockey Enrico Camici brought him along with a good run inside the last furlong but he could not get on terms with the f irst two. Zarathustras victory, the first by an English-trained horse in the Gold Cup for the past four years, was a great triumph for jockey Piggott and trainer Cecil Boyd-Rochfort. For Piggot it added an extra laurel to a remarkably successful season in which he had already ridden the winners of the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby and Oaks. Piggott scored another win in the next race after the Gold Cup, riding Lieut-Col. Giles Loders Arctic Explorer, a 6-to-l shot, to victory in the 6,968 King Edward VLT. Stakes. Among the field of eight for the 12-furlong race were four Epsom Derby failures. For Captain Boyd-Rochfort, Zarathustras win continued his great run of successes at the Royal Ascot meeting. He had saddled Retrial to win yesterdays main event, the Royal Hunt Cup, and with two victories today, he brought his score at the end of the third day to four. Cambremer, campaigning to become the seventh French-trained winner of the Gold Cup in 13 years, started joint second choice in the market with Lord Roseberys Donald at 4 to 1. Zarathustra, handsome black son of Persian Gulf out of Salvia, was on the 6-to-l mark. Again today it was real Royal Ascot with another victory for Queen Elizabeth. Her colt Pall Mall, a chestnut by Palestine out of Malapert, won the ,596 New Stakes for; two-year-olds over five furlongs to score the second win of the meeting for her purple, gold and scarlet colors. Pall Mall, trained like Zarathustra by Captain Boyd-Rochfort but ridden by Harry Carr, was second favorite at 6-to-l. The l-to-2 favorite, Phil Bulls Pheidippides, weakened and finished sixth among the eight runners.
