Spanish Babe Repeats Recent Good Performance at Hawthorne Course - on i9l BIRD FL0WERSEC0ND Grabner Representative Runs One IVlile and a Sixteenth in 1:45. Irish Wake and Cheraw Also Repeat Winning1 Performances Good Weather, Larger Crowd. Coming back with another superb performance, Spanish Babe, four-year-old daughter of Spanish Prince II. and winner of the Beverly Hills Handicap a week ago, carried the lavender and pink silks of Mrs. Frederick M. Grabner, of Chicago, to victory in the Wheaton Purse at Hawthorne yesterday. This was the headline attraction, and the Grabner miss ran one of the fastest distance performances of the meeting when she galloped the one mile and one-sixteenth in 1:45. Fast as she travelled under an impost of 110 pounds and on a firm, dry track, she did not disgrace E. R. Bradleys Bird Flower, which raced to second place, and also N. G. Gibbons Wild Turkey and Mrs. E. Denemarks Chasar, which finished in third and fourth places, respectively. The other contestants, Understand and South Gallant, were badly beaten. Bird Flower, recent conqueror of Nellie Flag and other speedsters in one of the fastest three-quarter races of the Chicago season, was installed the favorite, and she gave her many admirers an early thrill by darting to the front immediately after the start. As she made an easy, though fast pace for three-quarters, Spanish Babe, followed within a length with Understand third. MAINTAIN ADVANTAGE. With the last five-sixteenths before her. Spanish Babe moved up to challenge and then pass the Bradley four-year-old. As the lead changed, Wild Turkey and Chasar showed improved speed to overtake South Gallant and Understand, and also narrow the distance separating them from the leaders. Their final speed exceeded that of the winner and runner-up, but Spanish Babe and Bird Flower had raced too far away for the Gibbons and Denemark horses to overtake them. The winner, second choice in the .betting, returned a little more than 3 to 1 straight. She was piloted by James McCoy and scored before one of the largest crowds of the week, bright and more seasonable weather bringing out an increased attendance over the past several days. Warren Wrights Calumet Farm colors scored their first victory of the meeting and the juvenile Privileged graduated when that son of Sir Gallahad III. and Concession triumphed over eleven other maidens of his age in the first race at five and one-half furlongs. The Wright horse wrested the lead from Pansys First after a quarter and had enough speed to remain out of serious danger thereafter, though Overplay, which raced to the place, might have been more of a challenger had the winner kept a straight course in the last furlongs. In swerving over Privileged closed an opening through which L. Haas had hoped to drive the runner-up. Viajero accounted for third honors with High Pressure next. The latter, owned by Milky Way Farms, was installed favorite though the race was his first. He tired slightly when the real test came. CHERAW DRIVING. N. G. Gibbons Cheraw, favorite and ridden by J. Nolan, was returned a driving winner over Knight of Old, Golden Quest and six others in the second race at three-quarters. The winner and runner-up hooked up about a furlong from the wire and there was little to choose between them thereafter. As they sped past the line of finish with Cheraw leading by only a short head they were about two lengths before Golden Quest, which had all he could do to out-finish Papyrograph. The third race, also at six furlongs and given over to older sprinters of the cheaper variety, was another to go to the public choice, Irish Wake, which was so honored by the players, taking the dash for his second victory in successive appearances hereunder a patient and strong ride by E. Ar-caro, the successful G. Keetdn performer raced past Double Nugget to the front in the final sixteenth, winning by a length as Double Nugget held Prince John safe for second. Transport beat four others for the fourth money. Valdina Farms Palan, which had failed to finish better than third in his previous races, swept home a decisive winner over Autograph, Alice G., Cosette and three others in the fourth race, for plater juveniles. Palans victory marked the first surprise of the day. He was ridden by H. Albrecht. This saw Cosette, which shared favoritism with Autograph, open up a long lead on the turn, only to falter in the final straightaway, where Autograph and Alice G. held on fairly well as the winner came with a bullet-like belated rush to score his first win. Although she had exhibited top form in winning her previous engagement, the five-year-old Candescent encountered slightly better company in the Lombard Claiming Purse, which was the fifth race, and in taking the sprint the B. B. Carpenter mare surprised many patrons. She scored in a bristling finish and by a neck over Kieva, which barely managed to nose out Trinchera. With the luck in her favor, for Kieva was so sharply forced back soon after reaching the turn that it probably cost her the race, Candescent raced past Tracker and Trinchera to the lead in the stretch, then stood a mild drive as she remained in front. Meantime, Kieva gradually improved her position as she slipped through on the inside, while Trinchera held on well, though he had made much of the pace. 4
