1 LONG BRANCH TURF NOTES ? Even Stephen developed lameness while in the paddock before the first race Thursday and the J. C. Milne six-year-old was ordered withdrawn. Lee Johnson, publicity director of the Thorncliffe Racing and Breeding Association, is busy judging the letters of suggestion that were received from patrons of the Leaside course for which prizes have been offered by the management. All letters will be acknowledged and the lucky winner will be made known as soon as the manuscripts have been carefully studied. Racing secretary Charles F. Henry stated that he has received eleven nominations for the Long Branch Handicap, to be run on Saturday, and ten for the Canadian Breeders Handicap, to be run on the same day. The Long Branch Handicap is at six furlongs, and the Canadian Breeders Handicap at a mile and one-sixteenth. Before departing for his home in Windsor, Ont., on Thursday, William R. Woollatt, sponsor of a fourteen-day meeting at Devonshire Park last year, intimated that a meeting of ten or fourteen days may be staged at the Diamond "D" course during the early part of July. Woollatt has been instrumental in keeping racing alive on the Canadian side of the border during several lean years and with encouragement from racing fans and horsemen may make his intimation a thing of reality. Woollatt will study the problem carefully during the next few days and hopes to announce a definite decision within a week. With the Long Branch meeting now in a scheduled progress, plans are being made for the coming meeting of seven days, to be staged at Dufferin Park by the Metropolitan Jockey Club. The same capable staff of officials governing racing at Long Branch will be in charge of racing at the mid-city course, according to present plans.
