CANDY PRINCE WINS AGAIN Archibald Gelding Greatly Improved Racer Wins at Rockingham. Well-Backed Deliberate Unable to Do Better Than Second English-Bred Flamenco Finishes Third. SALEM, N. Hi, June 11. Candy Princc an improved gray gelding in the stable of H. T. Archibald, won the five and a half furlongs William "Horses" Ryan Purse, which featured the sport on a sultry day at Rockingham. The heavily backed Deliberate, coupled with Home Loan in the field of five, was second in the sprint, named in honor of one of New Englands old line horsemen and a man who was influential in bringing the races back to this sector. The runner-up, under the jacket of Miss Ethel Hill, was two lengths clear of Carleton Palmers Flamenco, marking, the first time the latter horse, a champion in England, has managed to finish in the money on this side of the Atlantic. The winner was ridden by Hilton Dabson, and that lad had him on the front end from the break to the judges stand. There was momentary excitement in the crowd of some 7,000 when Deliberate moved menacingly up at the stretch turn, but as they came around the turn and into the home lane Candy Prince was still in front and running easily. At the sixteenth post there appeared to be no chance he would be beaten. Deliberate pulled up lame and had done the same in a trial for the race. However, he does this as a rule. He just wasnt horse enough to beat the winner. Flamenco came from the rear to take the show award in a decision over Chance Line that was so close the third prices were delayed on the "tote" board. The judges sent down Chance Line as the show horse to Mort Mahoneys "tote" department. The time for the race was 1:05. Fra Diavolo made it two in a row when he led the field in the mile and a sixteenth Sun Purse, secondary attraction, on the program. The finish of this event was close. Fifty yards from the wire, five of the six horses were racing strung across the track neck and neck with nothing to choose between them. Then Caperton slashed the Lone Star racer and he lunged into a lead of half a length, which he held to the finish, though Bobs Boys, from the George Mohr stable, also leaped out of the pack with him and was a length and a half in front of H. H. Browns Swamp Angel at the end. H. E. Engers Prince Danny, ridden by jockey Eye, a lad who has been in good form ever since arriving here from New York, won the first event on the card, scoring by a length and a half over R. W. Collins Lee Gold. The latter had a half length to spare over Miss A. Doris Brophy at the end of the five and a half furlongs. The eight-year-old Volta gelding Ramus, carrying the colors of Nardi and Mangino, found a field of his own level in the sixth race, winning by a length over Mrs. P. A. Shaws Pocket. My Blonde finished third after leading right up to within a shadow of the finish. Trujillo, the favorite, raced prominently for three-quarters, then steadily retired to finish in front of but three of his field. Long Bit had a particularly rough trip. The winner paid off 1.90 to his backers.
