DETROIT DERBY CHOICES -H0LIYR00D, RUSHAWAY FIELD WILL BE SMALL Outlook Now for Not More Than Seven Starters in 5,000 Race. 1 Split Second Expected to Prove Formidable Factor Tugboat Frank a "Dark Horse." . DETROIT, Mich., June 11. Hollyrood, Hal Price Headleys good son of High Cloud Mandy Hamilton, and Joe L. Roberts Tugboat Frank had their final preparations foi Saturdays renewal of the 5,000 added Detroit Derby when they went a mile each this morning. Their splendid trials, word from the East that King Ranchs Split Second and three other eastern eligibles were en route Lore, and the withdrawals of Dnieper and Bow and Arrow, were the highlights of pre-Derby activities today. Dan Stewart vanned Dnieper back to Chicago, and William Hurley sent word from that city that E. R. Bradleys Bow and Arrow was not training satisfactorily. Although no definite word was received from the C. V. Whitney camp there was a report that trainer J. A. Healey had changed his plans and instead of relying on Bright Plumage, was sending Tatterdemalion here. The son of St. Germans went a handy mile and one-sixteenth over the Beimont Park track Wednesday morning in 1:58. Bright Plumages effort in the Shevlin Stakes was not up to expectations. Max Hirsch wired that Split Second went a mile in 1:40 and that the daughter of Sortie and three stable-mates were loaded early this morning. IMPRESSIVE GALLOPS. Although Hollyroods time was slightly better than that of Tugboat Frank, the latter worked alone, while Hollyrood was accompanied by Whopper. Hollyrood was timed the eight furlongs in 1:44, and Tugboat Frank stepped it off in 1:44. Tugboat Frank commenced his task at the seven-eighths post and, going along slowly, he covered the quarter in :26, the half mile in :53 and three-quarters in 1:18. Moving along at a brisk clip, he ran the final quarter in :26. In the Derby Trial Handicap Tugboat Frank was far back during the opening half mile and he was traveling at a fast pace at the end of the mile and seventy yards. Saturdays mile and three-sixteenths journey should be more to his liking and he is classified as the "dark horse" of the field. After a slow gallop, Hollyrood and Whopper broke from the stand and, under a snug hold all the way, ran the quarter in :25, the half mile in :51, the three-quarters in 1:17 and the seven eighths in 1:30. Trainer Duval Headley was greatly impressed with the colts work. "He is a far better horse than he was two weeks before the Belmont Stakes, and I believe he likes this track." said the young Kentucky horseman. Hollyrood was beaten in the Latonia Derby by Rushaway, but he turned in a good effort in finishing third in the Belmont Stakes. FILLY RATED DANGEROUS. Although indications point to a small field being under colors, it will give Split Second an opportunity of meeting some of the leading three-year-olds of the year. Trainer Hirsch is particularly high on her chances, and in the event she is successful over Rush-away, Hollyrood and the others, she probably will be a factor in later stakes. As the field now shapes up Rushaway and Hollyrood will share favoritism, regardless of what horses are sent westward. Teu-fel did not show much in the Shevlin Stakes,, and it is not likely that he will be shipped west. The management has practically given up hope of securing Granville. Fitzsimmons is stabled at Aqueduct, and the son of Gallant Fox more than likely will fill his engagement in the Dwyer Stakes, to be renewed at that track a week from Saturday. In the event Rushaway triumphs he will Continued on third page. According to word received from New York, Fitzsimmons will not have a starter in the race. He stated last Saturday that he would send one of the seven eligibles he is training. It was understood that he favored Teufel for the race, but probably changed his mind after the colts disappointing effort in the Shevlin Stakes. Merry Pete and Isolater have shown little to warrant their trek here. However, with the exception of Granville, the race is attracting the leading three-year-olds of the year. Bold Venture was eliminated when he went amiss and Brevity and Coldstream, both of which are also out of training, were not named when the entries closed. It was the hopes of Charles A. Bohn and Peter A. Markey, Detroit industrialists, that their Grand Slam would win the race, but he, too, has not been training satisfactorily and trainer Potts let up on the colt after his light breeze between races last week. With a field of seven the race will gross more than 8,150 and the winners portion will be about 8,000. The probable field for the 5,000 added Detroit Derby, to be run for the third time at the Fair Grounds, Saturday, with jockeys and weights follows: Horse. Wt. Jockey. Rushaway 123 J. Longden Hollyrood 119 W. Saunders Split Second... ...114 .1. Hanford Tatterdemalion 119 R; Workman Tugboat Frank 119 J. Deering Flag Cadet 119 .L.Turner Jimmie Cabaniss 119 E. Porter Doubtful starter.
