Here and There on the Turf ! i Discovery Sharp as Can Be j Assigned 138 Pounds in Stars j and Stripes j Roman Soldier Drops Six j Pounds J ; Whopper, St. Bernard Move Up j If 1 Discovery once again has demonstrated that he is the best horse racing in America. Jn winning the Brooklyn Handicap for the third consecutive time Alfred Vanderbilts Btar carried 136 pounds, ran the mile and one furlong in 1:50, scored by four lengths and had plenty in reserve. Eight lengths behind .the son of Display and Ariadne was Roman Soldier, which, under 126 pounds, had been expected to give Discovery something of a tussle, but Elwood Sachsenmaiers colt was unable to get close to the champion in the stretch drive, although under the severest sort of pressure. Discovery will be remembered for his connection with the Brooklyn Handicap, one of the most historic races in the country. No other horse ever had won it more than once, and the highest weight previously carried to victory was 135 pounds, which Exterminator toted. The time may never come again when the Brooklyn will fall to the lot of one horse on three different occasions. Now that Discovery has demonstrated conclusively that he is in his very best form again he is looking forward to his next engagement. Last summer the Vanderbilt pride was sent to Arlington Park after the Brooklyn, picking up the Detroit Challenge Cup en route to capture the Stars and Stripes Handicap, and the same procedure may be expected now. Charles J. McLennan has assigned the Display veteran 138 pounds, a jump of two pounds over his Brooklyn impost, and further recognizing the Aqueduct race, the Arlington handicapper has shaved six pounds off Roman Soldiers package. The Sachsenmaier four-year-old must take up only 120 pounds in the Stars and Stripes and it will not be surprising if he accepts. In receipt of eighteen pounds from Discovery instead of ten, Roman Soldier may prove much more troublesome than he did in the Brooklyn, but the former would continue to be a staunch favorite. McLennan is taking no liberties with "Whopper, Hal Price Headleys giant, which carried 122 pounds to victory oyer the mile and one-sixteenth distance in the Fontchar-train Handicap at Detroit Saturday. The enlarged son of Pharamond U. and Romance gets in the Stars and Stripes with a similar impost and, with the exception of Cavalcade, he is next in the weights. Cavalcade, whose comeback cannot be expected until later in July, was allotted 130 pounds. Whopper, whose size permits him to thrive on racing, is also at his best now and he should fancy the Arlington course, with its wide turns and short stretches. Another stakes winner Saturday given due consideration is St. Bernard, which scored a hollow victory in the Illinois Owners Handicap at Hawthorne. Elmer Dale Shaffers colt, which came through with very good performance last summer in finishing second to Omaha in the Classic, is in at 117 pounds. The son of Bull Dog has a fondness for the Arlington track, as he Continued on third page.. 1 1 5 i 1 r i 1 5 B a x S s HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. narrowly missed victory there as a two-year-old in the Arlington Futurity. Should Discovery sidestep the Stars and Stripes, which is riot likely, his next engagement probably would be in the Butler Handicap at Empire City, to be followed by the Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs. After winning the Stars and Stripes last year he returned to New York to take the Empire attraction, after which he moved up to the Boston course to win the Bunker Hill Handicap. Then he returned to Chicago to score a smashing victory in the Arlington Handicap. That was considered just about his best effort as a four-year-old, as he ran the mile and one-quarter in 2:01 under 136 pounds. It is not improbable that he will follow the very same program this summer, now that he has the Brooklyn behind him. When right, Discovery thrives on traveling and evidently on hot weather also, although he hasnt had much of the latter so far. If Discovery can duplicate his accom-plishments of last summer he will get over the 00,000 mark in earnings. His third Brooklyn triumph jumped him up to about 75,000 and if he can take the Stars and Stripes, Butler, Massachusetts and Arlington Handicaps the Vanderbilt star will go to Saratoga with something like 25,000 to his credit. It is not inconceivable that he will retire from racing with more than 00,000 in his ledger, but he has a very tough row to hoe before he does it. Sun Beaus position as the greatest gleaner is secure insofar as Discovery is concerned, as the latter is not expected to make another try for the Santa Anita Handicap although he may go after the 0,000 Widener Challenge Cup. Top Row, which jumped into the 00,000 class by winning the Santa Anita Handicap, has a much better opportunity of assaulting Sun Beaus record than Discovery as he is returning to California next winter with the hope of repeating in the worlds richest race.
