WATCHERUN IN FAST FINISH Closes in Game Fashion to Score in Epsom Downs Event. Favorites Fall to Live Up to Expectations in First Three Races Ideal Conditions Bring Out Large Crowd. HOUSTON, Texas, Oct 13 With ideal weather and track conditions existing, "Sheriff T. Binford Day" was celebrated in gala fashion at the Epsom Downs course Tuesday afternoon with Texas police officials -from various adjoining counties being present to participate in the honoring of the popular official of Harris County. The fifth and feature attraction of the program, a six furlongs event, brought together seven of the better selling platers which were paraded before the good gather-ing.of spectators during the presentation of the program. During the running of the first three contest the favorites failed to come up to the expectations of their supporters. Moane Keala, a consistent performer of the past, drew the bulk of backing in the third but did not get any portion of the purse. Watch-erun, flying the white arid yellow jacket of W. J. Hubbell and with Frankie Grill in the saddle, was returned the winner by a length over Oklaqueen, which was making her initial start on a mile track. Yehonala was third. Moane Keala engaged Oklaqueen in a head and head struggle during the first half mile of the five furlongs journey, succeeding in running the public choice into submission. However, Watcherun, which was never far out of contention, flashed to the front swiftly when straightened out for the wire and never left the result in doubt after assuming the forward position. KUDOLIlI BY HEAD. The opening race of the program brought out eight maidens of three years of age and older in a five and a half -furlongs sprint, and Rudolph Lad was T-eturhed: the winner by the margin of aheadqver.Epi Witch as the result of a power fuf finish" put up by jockey Harold Wes. Take Down, the favorite, was in the show position., Epi Witch and Take Down engaged ina. nip and tuck duel for a half mile, with Playful Prince in close attendance. Rudolph Lad was blocked as he made a move at the far turn, but despite this interference West worked his mount through the field and, finding racing room in the last eighth, booted the three-year-old son of Ladkin Myrtle V. to the initial victory of his career. For the first time during the meeting a single owner and the same jockey connected in both ends of the "Daily Double." Girls Chance easily accounted for the second event, a five and a half furlongs dash, in the silks of Joseph Cattarinich, Montreal sportsman, and Harold West, veteran rider, was in the saddle. Donnacona Kid was, second, two lengths behind the winner and third money went to Smart Girl, one of the pair that carried the colors of the Motor City Stable. Escohigh, on which there was considerable play, broke slowly and could do no better than finish fifth. Girls Chance possessed sufficient speed to outsprint her rivals for the entire trip. The defeat of the fourth consecutive choice when Barney Keens path was blocked by Mullet, which stumbled and lost his rider at the break, marred the running of the fourth race, another at .five-eighths of a mile. Mrs. F. J. Estes My Bow, under the guidance of Raymond , Hightshoe, was an easy winner and enabled the boy to register hs initial .victory as a .full-fledged jockey. Nusakan was three lengths off the winner and a length in advance of Iago.
