ARIEL CROSS AT TANFQRAN Crack Son of Ariel Included in H. C. Hatch Coast String. Canadian-Owned Star Gained First Fame at Santa Anita Holds Churchill Downs Record. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Oct 13. Headed by Ariel Cross, one of Americas best stake horses, the powerful stable ot H. C. Hatch, Toronto millionaire sportsman and breeder, unloaded here after a fast trip from eastern Canada. Five good horses, in charge of trainer W. H. Bringloe, came in the shipment. Ariel Cross, is a noteworthy addition to an already strong handicap division in training here. This fast four-year-old son of Ariel Cross Village is capable of holding his own against first-class opposition from, six furlongs to a mile and one-quarter. He first gained fame in the West at Santa Anita last winter when he ran Bert Baronis Top Row to a neck in the Christmas Handicap. Baroni immediately tried to buy him, making a flattering offer which ran into five figures, but Hatch had no intention of parting with his star then, nor has he now. The wisdom of the refusal was clearly reflected when Ariel Cross led such giants of the turf as Discovery, Rosemont, Time Supply, First Minstrel and Head Play past the finish in subsequent races. Taken to Texas following his successful winter at Santa Anita, Ariel Cross raced creditably against the best horses in the Lone Star State. Churchill Downs, was the next stop, and here he whetted the appetite of a Kentucky Derby Day throng when he lowered a track record of five years standing, running six furlongs in 1:10, thereby shaving two-fifths off the mark established by Don Leon. . . Following his Kentucky campaign. Ariel Cross raced against the best in Chicago, made a brief stand at Saratoga, then campaigned in eastern Canada under crushing weight imposts. Fresh and sharp, he is now-ready to tackle the best on .the grounds here, and that will include Indian Broom, Holl Image, Blue Boot, Special Agent, Valiant Fox, Primulus, Tick On and others of that caliber. Arriving with Ariel Cross were Law Suit, Sweepstaff, Sweepouch and Black Sleeve, speedy, hard-hitting horses. Last spring Hatch sent his stallion Sweep-ster to Heather Farm at Walnut Creek, Calif., the thoroughbred nursery of J. W. "March-bank. He plans to expand his thoroughbred holdings here, and thus California is gaining another patron of the turf who comes as a welcome addition.
