HOMEWOOD, 111., June 25. Western hopefuls with their eyes on the national two-year-old crown, meet in the richest event yet staged this year for their division when the Washington Park Futurity is inaugurated at Washington Park here tomorrow. The first running of the new event, carrying a value of about 0,000 and to be decided over six furlongs, has attracted a powerful field, though all of them are western-owned. Possibly this is as it should be, although the two ranking eastern cracks, The Chief and Perpetuate, would add much to the race, for the principal entries will be furnished by Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, Warren Wright, Emerson F. Woodward and H. P. Headley, who have expended lavish sums in the yearling market or breeding field, all with hopes of securing or developing a champion. For tomorrows race Mrs. Mars, whose horses race under the nom de course of Milky Way Farm, ha3 named Tiger, a son of Bull Dog and Starless Moment, and Mountain Ridge, a colt by Royal iMnstrel and Ethel Dear. Mr. Woodward, owner of Valdina Farms, will try to win the Futurity with Lassator, which captured the Prairie State Stakes early in the meeting, while the Calumet Farm of Mr. Wright has named Pharacase. Bourbon King and Menow will carry the hopes of the Headley establishment. NINE NAMED TO START. Only nine were named for the race, the others being Herbert M. Woolf s Joe Schenck, Cleaveland Putnams Robber Bold and M. L. Emerick and A. Pelleteris Garry, the latter being the only one of the group which has not been under colors. The potent combination of Tiger and Mountain Ridge is likely to give Mrs. Mar3 the honor of providing the public choice and this would be popular, as Mrs. Mars, whose stable last year led all others in purse winnings, is a Chicagoan. Though defeated in the Prairie State Stakes by Lassator, Tiger is rated as the number one Milky Way Farm hope. Tiger showed a tendency to run out in his early races, but trainer Robert McGarvey believes he has corrected this fault and looks for him to run straight and true. In his final heavy workout for tomorrows engagement Tiger sped over the Futurity distance in 1:12, phenomenal time for a private trial. Mountain Ridge won his only start at Washington Park and made a fine impression while effacing a defeat sustained on the occasion of his public debut at Churchill Downs. BOURBON KING FAVORED. Next to the Mars colt, those to be started by the Headley stable of Kentucky are the more highly fancied. Bourbon King, highly regarded son of Whichone and Ancient Queen, which started twice in the East, and, meeting some of the best youngsters, went down to defeat on both occasions, demonstrating that he is a colt of real quality when he was a galloping winner by five lengths at Washington Park last Monday. His stable companion, Menow, also triumphed in his last local engagement. He is a son j I of Pharamond II. and Cassie and was the j choice of trainer Frank Kearns over six other eligibles, including the flashy Teddy i Weed. STEADY PERFORMER. The Texas-owned Lassator, whose victory in the Prairie State Stakes requires him to carry top weight of 119 pounds tomorrow, has been a steady and effective performer under the Valdina banner. The same may be said of the Missouri hopeful, Joe Schenck, which won three of his six starts, beating, among others, Lassator, in a meeting at Churchill Downs. While neither Robber Bold nor Garry has shown anything for public consumption, the former having gone down to defeat in each of two starts, they are reputedly fast I youngsters and may cause trouble. These two, along with Pharacase, will race under 114 pounds tomorrow, while each of the others, Lassator excepted, must shoulder 117. All but Mountain Ridge and Pharacase, both having worked yesterday, when the former went three-quarters in 1:14, had final speed "blowouts" this morning. All went three furlongs. Bourbon King accomplished his in :35, handily; Garry in :35, handily; Joe Schenck, :35, handily; Lassator, :35, handily; Menow, :36t3, breezing, and Tiger, :37, breezing. i Lester Balaski and Jack Westrope have been engaged to handle the Headley starters, I while George Woolf came here from the East to be astride either Lassator or Robber Bold. Alfred Robertson, Irving Anderson, Leon Haas and Charles Corbett will ride for their employers: Milky Way Farm, Calumet Farm, Woolford Farm and Millsdale Stable, respectively. SUCCESSFUL MEETING. With the running of the 0,000 race, Chicagos first major meeting of the 1937 season will come to a close. The Washington Park session started slowly, but closed in fine style, a steady upturn being maintained after the first few days. Seven stakes, of which three ranked with the richest of their kind given by any track, were decided. The Milky Way Farms juvenile, Well Rewarded, won a hard-earned victory in the 5,000 Princess Pat, the King-Ranchs Dawn Play captured the 0,000 American Derby and tomorrows Futurity has attracted every powerful candidate for. juvenile honors save the easterners, The Chief and Perpetuate. A crowd rivalling that of American Derby :Day is expected at Washington Park on its final day of racing. 1
