ROUGH DIAMOND PREVAILS Outfinishes Far Cry After Thrilling Contest at Rockingham Park Ashe Takes Third Money. SALEM, N. H., June 25. Mrs. Ed Haugh-tons Rough Diamond drove to victory in the Advertiser Claiming Handicap at Rockingham Park today after a race that was one of the best contests of the New England season. The winner finished half a length in front of the Medway Stables Far Cry, with C. A. Calhouns Ashen third, just a nose in front of Peerless Pal. Corum and Bright Plumage were the only other starters. It was a horse race all the way. Peerless Pal and Far Cry went out in a stubborn battle for the lead and Peerless Pal showed the way around the turn and down the back stretch, with never more than a neck separating the pair. Hightshoe went to work in earnest on Far Cry on the far turn and took a narrow lead. Peerless Pal was beginning to tire as they straightened out, but a new menace loomed up on the horizon. It was Rough Diamond and he was coming fast. The pair went to the sixteenth post head and head. They were still head and head at the seventy-yard marker, but Jaekle was whipping Rough Diamond with all his might and had the fresher horse under him. The latter drew away slightly in the final twenty yards to take the verdict. He did little running until the final sixteenth, where he charged by to pass the tiring Peerless Pal. The race was run in 1:46. Once more perfect weather prevailed for the sport and a large week-day crowd was out.
