Duffy entry. -1 DETROIT, Mich., June 25. Thirteen stars of the handicap ranks will attempt to stop the successful march of Hal Price Headleys Whopper in tomorrows running of the 0,-000 added Frontier Handicap. Since arriving here the mammoth son of Pharamond II. swept the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap and the Wolverine Handicap before him. Both of those races were at one mile and a sixteenth and he carried 126 pounds and 130 pounds, respectively. Again he will carry 130 pounds, but the Headley star will be tested at one mile and three-sixteenths, and the heavy burdens become more tiring as the journey is increased. It will be Azucars farewell to flat racing, and although he was withdrawn on account of track conditions in the Wolverine, he is expected to accept regardless of the track or weather conditions. Incidentally, unsettled weather prevails today but no rain is forecast. EARLY HISTORY. Although the first four runnings of the Frontier, which was then known as the Frontier Stakes and for three-year-olds, took place at the old Highland Park track, within three miles of the Fair Grounds, the race gained its greatest popularity as a Canadian fixture. Such stars as the Kentucky Derby winners Meridian and Old Rosebud won renewals of the race, and other renowned performers, such as Star Charter, Slippery Elm, Best Pal, Boniface, General Thatcher, King Nadi, and others achieved the coveted honor. Many stars, however, were not successful, and among those who have tried in vain were Exterminator, Spot Cash, Joy Smoke, Froglegs, Hodge, Zeus, The Porter, Irish Kiss, Rancher and others. As the race was originated as a three-year-old institution, it is only fitting that several of this age were named for tomorrows renewal. All of them have excellent chances. War Minstrel, a royally-bred son of Royal Minstrel and War Feathers, was a little late in graduating from the maiden ranks. Carl S under 95 pounds, is a real dark horse in the race. He finished third in the Wolverine, coming from far back, and the additional furlong of the Frontier should benefit him. Carl S. will have professor Paul, winner of a handicap Thursday, as a running mate, and War Emblem is also coupled with War Minstrel. The other entry is Grey Gold and Sir Jim James. Azucar, under 115 pounds, follows Whop-t per in the line of weights, and it is the same package he carried to the finish of the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap within a half a length of the Headley star. With Whopper picking up four pounds over that race it appears that Azucar will be in a position to offer him sterner competition. UNLUCKY IN DRAW. Again Infantry was unlucky in the draw for post positions. He drew the extreme outside stall for the Wolverine and will have the same place in the Frontier. His impost is 108 pounds and considering he lost a great deal of ground in the Wolverine, his effort was very commendable. . Paradisical which returned to competition in winning style on Wednesday and War Emblem, will carry 104 pounds each. First Entry, Professor Paul, and Gyral under 100 pounds each complete the field and should Professor Paul run back to his brilliant victory on Thursday he probably will make it very interesting for his opponents. An excellent program which includes a handicap and two allowance races will support the feature. In the handicap Dixianas Crows Flight will carry the top burden of 118 pounds over six furlongs, Biscayne Blue under 114, Sun Power, Doloway, Gene Wagers and Mary Vito complete the small field of three-year-olds.
