1 THRILLS AT LAT0N1A Spectacular Sport Enthralls Patrons of Popular Kentucky Track. Dead Heat Comes in First Half of "Daily Double" Kne e Deep Qualifies Roberts Triple. LATONIA, Ky., June 25. Close finishes, spectacular stretch duels and the first dead heat of the season, enthralled a large assemblage of racing devotees at Latonia this afternoon, despite the sweltering heat. However, just to complicate matters, the dead heat occurred in the first half of the "Daily Double," when Kentucky Jane and John Shouse crossed the finish line on even terms, giving holders of the two combinations a share in the pool. Although a thrilling brand of racing resulted in the majority of instances, chief interest was centered in the Olive Hill Purse, fifth on the fare, which was designed for two-year-olds at a distance of. five furlongs, and included two well regarded eligibles for the Cincinnati Trophy. Knee Deep, from the stable of J. W. Parrish, Midway, Ky., banker, justified the tremendous support accorded him by the bettors by easily defeating C. P. LeBlancs High One, but failed to boost his stock as a potential Trophy winner through the effort. Janice, from the stable of S. G. Baker, Sr., finished third, with Mrs. M. J., Which Blond and Hollywood Ace following in this order. The chestnut son of Percentage, which has been strongly mentioned as the juvenile to beat in the renewal of the Cincinnati Trophy a week hence, was his own pacemaker throughout, thus performing differently than in his previous starts when he displayed an inclination to come from behind. MAINTAINS ADVANTAGE. Knee Deep outbroke his rivals, but Mrs. M. J. and Janice were right at his throat-latch before the first quarter was traversed, and High One was in fourth place, with Hollywood Ace and Which Blond hopelessly out of it. But around the far turn, jockey Porter Roberts reached back and encouraged his charge a few times with the whip, and he drew into the clear. Heading into the stretch, Roberts again applied the whip and Knee Deep maintained his comfortable advantage, but midway of the home lane displayed a tendency to bear out under the pressure of having set the pace, despite the fact that the race was not the fastest for the distance recorded this season. Finishing three lengths in advance of High One, the only other Trophy eligible in the race, Knee Deep rewarded his legion of supporters with odds of 3 to 10. Jockey Roberts came back with a spurt that enabled him to regain the lead over his rivals when he scored his third victory of the day astride B. Combs Beauty Sleep in the sixth race, a six furlongs dash with eight participating. Brierton was second and King Carl third. The chestnut filly triumphed by the margin of a length after overtaking Brierton approaching the turn in the stretch. Another stirring finish came in the second race. Even the camera could not separate the first two horsesi and brought about the first dead heat of the season, involving Kentucky Jane and John Shouse, with Mammy B. gaining third money. Twelve two-year-olds engaged in the five furlongs dash, and Kentucky Jane was the pacemaker throughout, while the heavily-backed John Shouse worked his way up and finished rapidly after straightening out in the stretch. The gallant little gelding tried desperately to overtake Kenucky Jane from the furlong post home, but the courageous filly stuck to her task and the best the favorite could do was obtain an even break.
