DEAD HEAT IN OPENER Off Time and Red Magic Finish Even at Fairmount Park. Both Horses Previous Winners at Meeting — Rain Ceases Before Running of First Race. COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 19.— The first thrill of the Friday afternoon program of races offered at Fairmount Park, came with the running of the opening event, when Off Time and Red Magic finished on even terms for the first dead heat of the current meeting. Reaching the end of the five and one-half furlongs distance together, Off Time and Red Magic were some two lengths before Idle Worker, which accounted for third honors. In running to a dead heat, Off Time and Red Magic were both accounting for their second triumphs at the meeting. Off Times victory was his second in three starts, while Red Magics winning effort was his second out of seven starts during the present racing year. With the dispatching of the field, Anns Baby broke in first position, closely followed by Wise Eddie and Idle Worker. Red Magic left the barrier in fourth place, and Off Time was fifth as the field straightened out in the opening run. Anns Baby soon relinquished her short lead to Red Magic, which had charged up fast in the first quarter, to show the way while being pursued by Off Time. The latter, held slightly off the pace by Otto Grohs with Red Magic continuing to lead the field until the turn for the stretch run had been reached. Although skies were overcast during the morning hours and showers prevailed, the rain ceased for the running of the first race and the sky was but partly cloudy. The racing strip was classified as fast for the opening event, which was witnessed by a large crowd. Apprentice Otto Grohs completed a double for the day, and when the lad, who is leading the riders here, brought DOrla across the finish a winner in the third race his employer also registered a double. Grohs employer sent forth Off Time, which raced to a dead-heat victory with Red Magic in the running of the initial race on the program, and the Idaho turfman also sent DOrla postward to account for the third event. In the third race DOrla was an easy winner, maintaining a clear lead of four lengths-before Bucks Pal at the end of the sprint. Miss Vep was third, a length farther back, and the distance of a length and a half separated the latter from Rolled Notes. The "Daily Double" combination paid off 88.80 to those who had tickets on Earlyin, winner of the second race, and DOrla, which took down third honors. A long shot scored when Falls City, carrying jockey R. Conner in the old gold and orange colors of the Illinois turfman Ira Gawthorp, took a hard-earned victory in getting up to snatch a head decision over Queen Irene in the running of the fourth race. Boston Sound, the favorite, finished third after showing the way to the field for the greater part of the six furlongs sprint.
