NEW YORK, N. Y., May 19.— Three-year- olds of the second division came together in the best offering at Belmont Park today in the Troubadour Purse, at a mile and a sixteenth. It brought the best finish of the day when William Ziegler, Jr.s Time Sheet barely won over Chalmac, from the Crescent Stable, and the Millsdale Stables Sun Lover. The three leaders crossed the line closely lapped and well before John Hay Whitneys Whisperer. With no special feature down for decision, the overnight offerings were first class and delightful weather resulted in a big crowd being on hand. The racing was formful and the players had a fair measure of good fortune in locating the winners. It was Whisperer that cut out the running in the Troubadour. The son of Pharamond II. left his stall in motion and Basil James permitted him to go right along until he was nicely clear of the others, but galloping under a steadying restraint. Chant dOr was showing the way to Gridine back of the Whitney colt and then came My Porter and Sun Lover, with Time Sheet and Chalmac bringing up the rear of the small field. Chant dOr was first to weaken. When he faded there was no serious move made by Haas on Gridine to run down the pacemaker, but My Porter and Sun Lover both moved up, the latter racing on the outside and going so smoothly that he seemed a real threat. Whisperer was still two lengths clear as he rounded into the long stretch. At that time Gridine was leading Sun Lover, but he was doing his best. In the final furlong Whisperer tired badly and for an instant it was Sun Lover that was showing the way, but Time Sheet and Chalmac were charging up, after having avoided the early pace, and seventy- yards from the finish they were lapped on the Millsdale colt. In the final furious drive it was the head of Time Sheet that nodded down in front, while the photo revealed that Chalmac had beaten Sun Lover by a nose for the place.
