[ ! NORTH RANDALL TURF NOTES f _ = A..O. Ashworth, alias "Last Dollar Dan," of news reel fame, plans to be on hand for the opening of the North Randall meeting Saturday. Jockey Ted Atkinson was an arrival here. He will do the riding for the Calumet Farm stable. Frankie Kuentz will be in charge of the money room. His crew will include Gil Foley, Bill Cody and Will McDonald. Henry Green, Shaker Heights sportsman and race track official, is to serve as mutuel plant manager. A census of the stables quartered at North Randall through Tuesday afternoon revealed that sixty-two outfits were represented. Jockey Jack Mayer reported to trainer Charles Houbre of the Howard Oots-Dan B. Midkiff string. The outfit consists of Ides of March, Milada, Snug, Jockway, Tearout and Presumption. The horses that Rollie Shepp brought in for the River Divide Farms, owned by R. J. Deinst, are Travel Agent, Handiboy, Milk, Mystic Sign and Mint Dodge. Schooling of horses from the six furlongs chute was started Wednesday morning by starter W. C. Daly and his crew and will be continued each morning that the weather permits. W. T. Crosthwait, veteran Lexington horseman, brought in Alcedo and Azote, the latter a juvenile and will have one other for racing here during the thirty-three-day meeting. J. T. Simmons arrived with four head, two the property of Dr. F. C. Burket and a like number for himself. The quartet includes Ann Star, Capt. Nadi, Mr. Quick and Palm Island. Jack Yerian will serve as paddock judge, it was announced today. Yerian has had experience in several branches of the official personnel. J. P. Keezek checked in with the following members of the Le Mar Stock Farm: Mightily, Miss Damara, Moneyless, Merrily San, Miss Selma, Myponne, Mr. Buddy, Mingling, Mummer, Moody and Matchless. Jockey Alex Schlenker will join the stable here Friday. The veteran reinsman Bob Finnerty has been engaged to do the bulk of the riding for the stable in charge of L. V. Bellew, Jr. A total of three more carloads of racers from Louisville were reported en route here Wednesday, which will boost the number of racers available to more than six hundred. Steve Valenti, New Orleans turfman, was the first to get away from Fairmount Park and checked in with Walter L. and Victory March. Steward Owen E. Pons, Sr., put in his appearance, completing the staff of officials who will direct the racing affairs at North Randall. Elzey Brown, who has been conditioning horses for many years, has taken over the horses of M. J. Schmitt, of Louisville, the lot being headed by the "handicap performer Sortie Star. Brown replaced S. T. Mapp, who was forced to relinquish his post because of illness. Apprentice Dan West accompanied the stable from Churchill Down3 to do the stables riding.
