; i ; 1 : ] TEN NAMED FOR INAUGURAL All Expected to Start in Saturdays Opening Feature at North Randall. Newly Converted Harness Track Practically Completed for tjie Entertainment of Cleveland Racing Patrons. CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 24.— Ten thoroughbreds of handicap caliber were made eligible for the initial running of the North Randall Inaugural Handicap, opening feature of the Cleveland Jockey Clubs program on Saturday afternoon, it was announced today by racing secretary Julius G. Reeder. Thoroughly renovated and spic and span with the most modern of equipment and appurtenances, spacious parking grounds and luxuriously-furnished clubhouse, the new North Randall course, heretofore the mainstay of harness racing for thirty years, presents an imposing picture in its surrounding emerald green and rolling hills in the distance. Where the immortals of the harness world once displayed their wares in pomp and splendor, has risen a new shrine of the running horse world. Charles Y. McVey, retired Cleveland capitalist, and his associates, have spared no expense in renovating the plant for the comfort of the racing patrons of central Ohio and are justly proud of their accomplishment. MUCH PROGRESS MADE. With the return of sunshine today, much progress was made by the laborers applying the final touches to the exterior of the structure heretofore delayed by the incessant rains of the past week. The track-proper has dried out amazingly well and horsemen were surprised in the rapid draining qualities of the racing strip. Indications are that the entire list of candidates for the Inaugural will face the starter for the ,500 added purse, which will be contested over the mile and one-sixteenth route and which provides a well-balanced field of performers. All of the candidates are on the grounds, including John Galbreaths Francesco, victor in the Governors Handicap last Saturday in a stirring finish which toplined the finale of the Beulah Park spring meeting. Stern competition is expected to be furnished by M. J. Schmitts Sortie Star, which ran a smashing race last Saturday to finish second to Arabs Arrow in the Kentucky Handicap at Churchill Downs, while W. E. Martins Drudgery, a consistent campaigner among the better-grade racers in Florida during the winter, is another in the group that is scheduled to vie for the first days major prize. A. C. Snyders Pompeys Pillar and High One, both triumphant during the Churchill Downs season; Jesse Spencers Neighbor, Nelson Pombles Flutterby, Mrs. A. M. Creechs Dusky Prince, Whistling Dick, owned by Mrs. Harry Wiener, and Saunders-town complete the list of eligibles. DEPENDS ON WEATHER. With favorable weather and track condi tions prevailing for the staging of the first days program it is anticipated that all of the eligibles will accept, and in the event that an off track prevails for the occasion, at least six are counted on to start, and this group already have demonstrated ability to negotiate an off track with success, therefore insuring a well-balanced field in either instance. Weights will be assigned the eligibles by handicapper Reeder tomorrow, with acceptances and declarations made through the entry box at the regular time of closing of the entries for Saturdays program of eight races, which offers a variety of races for the sportively-inclined of Cleveland and its environs. Route racing predominates on the initial card, five of the contests being scheduled for a mile or over, with three tilts bringing together the dash performers. Closely-matched rivals are in prospect for all of the supporting events, which is expected to prove a magnet to the racing fans of this section.
