UNDEFEATED KNICKERBOCKER Works Mile in 1 : 42 2/5 in Preparation for Engagement in Withers Stakes. Whisperer Goes Same Distance in 1:42 — Pompoon Gallops Mile and a Quarter in 2:06%— Other Training Moves. BELMONT PARK, N. Y., May 24.— •Knickerbocker, Joseph E. Wideners un-| beaten colt and winner of the Metropolitan Handicap last Saturday, underwent his final important trial for the Withers Stakes this this morning at Belmont Park in working a handy mile in 1:42%. The son of Teddy and Warrior Lass was one of numerous stakes candidates undergoing trials at Long Island tracks for immediate engagements. Under the direction of trainer Pete Coyne, the Widener colt was evenly rated in his workout, doing the half mile in 50 seconds and the three-quarters in 1:16. John Hay Whitneys Whisperer, Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Lovely Night, A. G. C. Sages Entracte and the King Ranchs Brazado were other possible Withers starters noted in trials. The best effort was by Whisperer, which went the Withers distance of a mile in 1:42, after negotiating the half in :48 and the three-quarters in 1:13%. Lovely Night did the eight furlongs in :50, 1:17 and 1:44, and Entracte breezed a half in :52. Brazado was timed six furlongs in 1:14%, the half in :48%. The outstanding workout of the morning was that of Pompoon in preparation for the Suburban Handicap next Tuesday. Jerome H. Louchheims veteran turned the Suburban distance of a mile and one-quarter in 2:06% handily. His time for the half was :49%, three-quarters 1:14 and the mile in .1:40. Heelfly, A. G. Vanderbilts candidate for the same event, was well rated in doing a mile in :51, 1:17 and 1:42, and Thanksgiving breezed four furlongs in :52, probably to get him ready for a longer trial today. Juvenile stakes eligibles asked for speed were Gannet, three-eighths in :36; Now What, a half in :52, and Bashful Duck, five-furlongs in 1:06. In addition to those mentioned above, other probable Withers starters include Hash, Johnstown, Gilded Knight, El Chico and Porters Mite, while Cockerel, Woof Woof and Merry Knight appear the most likely of the other juvenile eligibles to go postward in that five furlongs event.
