May 2.— David C. Wilhelm, Cahokia. 111., sportsman, provided the nose winner of the Wedgewood Purse when his consistent mare, Bubbling Easy, lasted in the tightest finish of the meeting to beat Perne L. Grissoms Knights Gift before a crowd of 12.485 that comfortably filled this plant here this afternoon. The two locked in a desperate struggle at the head of the stretch and after they had passed the wire it required several minutes for the judges to make their decision after examining several photographs. Third in the five-furlong dash was William B. Bishops Richavoo. a colt who lost considerable ground throughout, while F. Scotts Penniless was fourth. Bubbling Easy raced the distance in 1:025 and Earl J. Knapp put up a splendid ride in the saddle. Balmy weather continued for local patrons, although a strong wind blew up considerable debris around the course throughout the running. Favorite for the Wedgewood was One Blue, a gelding noted for his sharp early speed and his fondness for this track. However, he was devoid of his usual dash and managed to beat only one horse. In Running Mood Bubbling Easy, one the other hand, was in a running mood after having failed her backers as favorite in a previous race over this track. Knapp took her in front im-medi?tely after starter Roy "Boots" Dick-erson sprung the latch and Knights Gift was the one to press the pace. Richavoo also broke well but could not get over to the rail and by the time he hit the first turn he was out in the center of the track and lost enough ground right there that possibly could have made the difference of winning and losing. Knapp hustled Bubbling Easy right along, while Knapp was satisfied to remain a length or two in the rear while heading the others. As they made the final turn Bubbling Easy drifted out just enough to allow the Grissom mare to get through on the rail and a sixteenth out they were i closely aligned, with both Knapp and Hank , Manifold, on Knights Gift, driving hard. Knights Gift went postward without a whip. L. J. Trillas Raiding Star, a gelding who has steadily been dropped down the class ladder since last year, finally found his right division against the ,500 platers in the fifth, a dash of seven furlongs. Tommy Bates broke the four-year-old on top and led the remainder of the distance, finally checking in a length to the good over Mrs. E. D. Ewart, Sr.s, Duke E., while E. R. Moulders Make It Easy, favorite in the field, was third. The latter made a wide sweep of the first turn and that cost him valuable ground that he was unable to overcome, although he made a threatening gesture later. O. J. Breault, whose father operated the well-known Brolite Farm before his death last year, recorded his initial victory in Illinois when Greytown scored by four lengths over the cheap platers in the opener. It also marked the first victory for trainer Leonard J. Wilson since he took over the Breault horses. Greytown, who had not raced since last November at Tanforan, was in fine fettle as he stepped out of the gate on top and then proceeded to run his rivals into the ground and then d:ew away to score with ease under the fine handling of jockey Gerald Porch.
