Love Sonnet Back In Winning Stride Popovitz Stallion Finishes Three and One-Half Lengths Clear of Binky B. at Havre HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 2.— Registering his first victory in more than a year, C. S. Popovitz Love Sonnet this afternoon trimmed a classy field in the mile and a sixteenth Perry ville Purse, feature of an interesting program. Having finished third in his two previous starts this season. Love Sonnet improved smartly under the strong handling of Steve Brooks and finished three and a half lengths clear of his opposition in 1:46. W. Y. Goldsboroughs Binky B. was second, two lengths before Miss Margie Fishers Shivaree. Christiana Stables Service Pilot, the favorite with the crowd of approximately 7,000, was fourth over Mrs. H. K. Hickeys Ocean Front. Love Sonnet was fourth choice in the five-horse field and paid 1. Binky B. was hustled nicely in the run to the first turn and had attained command before the elbow was reached. He was followed closely by Shivaree, who forged to the front along the backstretch. The two raced in that order to the three -eighths pole, where Brooks sent Love Sonnet to the front. Draws Clear Under Pressure Once having attained command. Love Sonnet was snugged to the furlong marker, where he again drew clear under intermittent pressure. From that point it was merely a matter of who would finish second to the Popovitz star. Binky B. had enough in reserve, thanks to Bobbie Stranges steadying effort, to come along for the place money. Shivaree shortened stride through the stretch, but there wasnt a competitor behind him worthy of a challenge. Service Pilot, who had been a disappointment in previous races this season, but was expected to improve, evidently isnt that same horse who won last years Gittings and T. K. Lynch handicaps, for he has failed to show a semblance of that speed recently. Ocean front, too, was expected to move up considerably with a race under his girth, but his improvement, too, failed to develop.
